My post disappeared and then the thread was closed!

Let it stand as is. While I was delighted to see the thread and where it might go, I also don't care to have things kicked back and forth. A decision was made, its basis was sound, we move on.

That being said, there are people like me that like to know how everything works. There is almost nothing I don't want to take apart to learn how it works. Its a disease many of us have.

If you want to know more about these lenses this is a great way to start besides breaking one open. :)

Everyone is entitled to their own opinions but not to their own facts. It's important to know the difference. Facts belong to everyone, opinions belong to the individual. So.....

Fact: The number 10 is larger than the number 5.
Fact: Gravity.
Fact: The earth is round.

Opinion: It's wrong to eat spaghetti with a spoon.
Opinion: It's wrong to use a salad fork when eating the main course.
Opinion: It's wrong to take apart a lens at home.

Two more:
Fact: A Mod can delete posts, rightly or wrongly.
Opinion: A Mod not agreeing with a post.

I don't think Ryan should not have deleted any posts simply because he disagreed with them. I think it was a small abuse of the position. Better to have stated an opinion and offered advice and then move on, which he finally did in Post #16.

Of course, all of this is my opinion. How meta !!!

Well, that is your opinion and you are welcome to it. I disagree and would say that it is a fact that it is a bad idea for someone with no/little experience should listen to random anonymous strangers on the internet encourage him/her to take apart a $22,000 exacting optical instrument, in a possibly contaminating environment, which requires a very special skill set and tool set to do properly.

I made a judgement call, and my call was that is was in the better interest of the OP and the internet to remove the poison and kill the thread.

Either way, let this bit of film humor be my last response to this thread:

Fact -- it is absolutely horrible advice to tell an inexperienced individual to open up a $22,000 precision optical instrument. That is not an opinion, it is a fact, in the same way as any surgeon would say it was absolutely horrible advice to tell someone to do their own appendectomy. It was horrible advice, and it was irresponsible advice.

It is a matter of opinion as to whether that horrible advice should have been deleted, or if it should have been left as-is and then quoted and clearly labeled as horrible, horrible advice.

The simple fact of life of operating a website is that there are posts that are going to be deleted. Spam will be deleted. Vote-begging posts will be deleted. Personal attacks will be deleted. Ryan made a judgement call to delete what he thought was terrible advice that would and could only result in optical tragedy. I can see both sides of the argument, but don't really have a problem with him deleting the post. If we had it to do over again, I would probably vote for the "quote and correct it" method, and that's what we'll advise mods to do going forward.

Jason- agree or disagree, what an elegant, thorough, thoughtful (and time consuming) reply. Barry, too.
Ryan, perhaps, could have (schedule permitting) chimed in sooner with his reasoning (it was 2 or 3 days, I think?), or even at the time of the deletion.
You know, information to fill the vacuum, that going unfilled, can become full of anger, resentment, confusion, etc.

Jason- does voting posts down make them invisible?

Thanks to the 3 mods (and members) for making this place work so well...

For you, Jason...

Jason- does voting posts down make them invisible?

if they get voted down enough, yes.

EDIT: I should clarify... they are still viewable, but not without additional action by the reader. They are "collapsed", rather than invisible.

Kudos on a very thoughtful and interesting thread in it's own right. I think it speaks well to the degree of thoughtful professionalism and discourse that permeates this entire site.
A judgement call was made... it came down favoring those judged in danger of committing a probably uninformed and highly regrettable act. Weighing the argument, I'd have to side with the Mods - I think labeling this as censorship is a real stretch. It does however serve to illuminate the type of decisions the mods are faced with. I for one think they do a fantastic job.

Lastly - a thanks to Ryan for those Zeiss & Cooke links - great info much enjoyed.
