Simple but REALLY annoying . . .

I want maximum Depth of Field and the exposure looks just right at f11 but resolution's not good at f11 is it? So I bring in the ND . . . (easy-peasy)
'cept we're now talking f4.8 - what DOF are we going to get with that?

OK - OK. "buy a 1 stop ND filter" I hear you all cry.

More stuff to carry, more stuff to keep cleaning (and possibly scratching) - and more stuff to screw on and off - especially difficult when it's buried in the bowels of my Geardear Mattebox, French Flag and Sidewings setup.

Built-in 1 stop ND would have been such bliss.

You can reduce or increase shutter speed too. Just don't get above 125 shutter for sharpness.

andy i think you might be back to front on the issue. For best DOF you want the lowest fstop - meaning a more open iris. Thus 4.8 is better than f11.

EDIT: sorry I just read you want max. DOF. So I am assuming a wider DOF. Please ignore my non reading brain this evening, its under pressure and collapsing.

He says he wants "maximum deph of field", not shallower.

EDIT- Just saw your correction, so disregard this comment :)

Ncje, I think what he means with maximum DOF, he wants everything to be infocus background and foreground.

SORRY ALSO SAW THE EDIT NOW ONLY

Thanks SPZ - but I'm not sure what you're angling at here - (no pun intended).
To increase the DOF I'd need to reduce the shutter speed.
But I'm shooting 50fps, so I don't think I can go below 1/50 sec can I?

Anyway, I'm shooting rapid action, so I think it's academic anyway.

The point I'm trying to make is that the ND steps are too great on the HVX200 - that's all.

but shutter 125 will give you that little bit of light reduction.
soarprod, I don't think you're following this thread. Either that, or you need to read up on photographic exposure and depth of field.

Soarprod was exactly spot on. He's saying by going to shutter 1/125, you'd get the same brightness-darkening effect that you'd get by adding a 1-stop ND filter.

Absolutely right - sorry Soarprod I wasn't thinking correctly. You're right, I'm wrong.

And thanks for pointing that out Barry.
