My noise is different than yours

I've been playing with my HVX and reading about peoples noise issues in daylight so today I shot with the camera in full daylight and all default settings viewing on a 2405. Obviousely the 2405 with default settings is a worst case scenario, which was my intent.
Now I am in no way making excuses for the camera but after scrutinizing the footage on the monitor at the default settings I can see with some effort , some noise. Coming from a film background and having shot a lot of 16mm I would have never noticed it had I not read any posts. I love the image, oh man that color, that the camera produces and the noise does not bother me one bit. If the image was super clean I might just have a problem with that. I know with some in camera tweaks and a good monitor this noise might be lessened or eliminated.
Having shot a lot of 16mm, grain noise was always there and accepted and I am wondering if those that have an issue with the noise are just coming from a different visual place than I am. I have no complaints and no I'm not trying to justify my purchase or want to upset those that are troubled by the noise. Now lets get a mac p2 viewer ( an affordable one), MXF support for FCP and a bigger P2 store hard drive and I will be content. C'mon Panasonic.

I've read, can't remeber where, but can't verify that Apple uses the same company for its LCD panel so I think you'd be in the same place. I think the options for using a lcd panel as a monitor you can trust is the HD link by blackmagic if you are using a desktop computer and the upcoming Matrox MXO if you have a laptop. But I do not think the MXO supports 1080p. Hope I'm wrong.

The problem is not in the panel, but on the AD convertor sitting on the analogue HD in. As apples displays don't have any analogue inputs, they need some more equipment (ie: a computer and a videocard) to be able to use as a field monitor.

From what I can tell, the whole "noise" issue is a non-issue. I have a client with a tricked out FCP HD system that wanted to see how well the firewire inputs would capture images from the HVX. So, I went over to his place and hooked up the camera and set it to 1080 24P Cine D.

We left the overhead lights off and just shot with the accent lights in his edit suite. He turned a table lamp to face the wall which was painted a medium blue. I did a pan of the room. The images on his desktop LCDs weren't all that impressive. He is using a pair of HP LCDs that looked to be about 22". I don't know the model, but knowing this guy, they were not inexpensive. The image was full of micro blocks and banding.

Then we turned on his new Sony HD projector. Again, I don't know the model, but it is a fairly new model and according to the Sony rep, it is being used in a couple of places to time DIs. The image was unbelievable. Every diagonal line was perfectly smooth. No micro blocks. My client kept commenting on how clean the image was. And believe me, he is the kind of guy that would gripe at me constantly if he saw the slightest hint of noise. The thing that blew me away was the way the camera handled the desk lamp. The blue wall was underexposed a few feet away from the lamp and was way overexposed at the lamp. The picture showed a perfect gradient throughout the range. Absolutely no banding at any point. The overexposed area blended into a pure white without any of the ugly digital noise we are all used to.

I have to admit, I was a very late adopter of digital video because of the banding, artifacts, and other issues. I always thought my BetaCam SP images were a lot prettier. I don't think I will be shooting with the BetaCam anymore. The HVX has made a believer out of me. Heck, I may not have too much of a need to break out the 35MM rig anymore either.

Pretty much all Panny cams are noisy... as is the DVCproHD codec... noisy does not mean unusable or even bad... it is just the way it is... The benefit is richer colors. Canon and Sony HDV both have much less noise but more artifacting... 6 one way, half a dozen the other...
