My nex 5n is terrible!!

edit: Again, the issue is solved. No need posting smartass comments. Although might be good for others to be aware of this (quite serious!) issue aswell. And whether or not there would be a potential diff between PAL & NTSC units (something i've noticed in the past can affect banding & noise patterns)

20 minutes of running around in the apartment, going through all the picture styles / settings... I think I've pinned the issue. Contrast Minus Anything but default (0) brings out hideous banding. I had put -3 Contrast in all the picture styles, simply to get more DR. (And, by Andrew Reid's testing a good approach). Well, seemlingy not... Andrew, you reading? PAL camera aswell?

Seriously. What the heck is this!

My 5n is like a GH1... the image needs to be slightly overexposed, or there is fixed pattern sensor banding & color noise all over the place. No problem with previous tests. Today, shooting both under/normal/over exposure, there is some serious issues going on... Let's just refer to it as the GH1-syndrome, cus everyone already know what a pain that was (magic hacks aside).

Slightly over = great

This... Hideous.

Yeah, I could have a broke camera... but, I'd be happy if someone else made a simple underexposure test and check this out. Waiting for camera repairs (even if they aint faulty) usually takes at least a month... not good, either.

To be honest the image reminds me of my Contour, you know the GoPro-ish camera? Bit banding here & there, stuff like that... bleh. What have I purchased

So you set it up properly and it works correctly now? Can you post your settings and upload to Vimeo? Thanks

It seems as though the links above contain a virus or trojan called Win 7 Antispyware 2012. My computer lit up when I downloaded the video. Definitely avoid...

WHat? Your comp gives you red flag on .mts files? Mediafire is teh serious... maybe pressed something else by mistake.

The files are, by the way, uploaded to web straight from the SDHC over usb, didn't even drag em over to my HDD.

Be careful whose advice you take on the internet - having a website does not make one qualified to test and analyze cameras, but apparently it won't stop one from talking authoritatively about such subjects.

I am beginning to get very upset with Mr. Reid. His inexperience with cameras is beginning to encroach on my world, as clients, coworkers and collaborators have seen his misinformation posted elsewhere and believe it - leaving it up to me to educate those he has corrupted. I'm fine with the inexperienced using the new technology to learn about cinematography - what I'm not fine with is the inexperienced portraying themselves as experts to gain website hits.

Do a quick search and you'll find it's a very common problem with mediafire.

I definitely agree. After using your camera for 20 minutes, that is typically not enough time to get comfortable with it and understand how it performs. Did you have everything set to manual? Because there are quite a few things on there that can cause noise, and it seems like in anything "auto", the camera likes to stay in the 1600-3200 iso range even with proper lighting and trade it for faster shutter speed.

The Nex-5n is a great camera. But for $599 MSRP, it's not a perfect camera, so don't expect it to be. And the title is VERY msileading..

The title should have said "I don't know how to use my new Nex-5n, Can someone help?"

I'd just assume a simple thingy like lowering the contrast wouldn't make the camera go bananas. Again, I could still have a faulty unit, cus I can't remembering seeing similar issues on any camera. Well, at least not from lowering a contrast setting... Poor opt. Or s**t sensor. Only Sony would know... dun dun dun.

Not reading into his site more than anyone elses. Teh internetz is a pile of crap, that's why I end up buying all the cameras & testing them out. Again, this was a test, not out shooting a movie in my garden.

Take some fresh air bro.

it seems perfectly fine to me that someone would come to these forums after having some issues with a camera - 99% of the time it will be the user's fault, but that's normal too, and this is what these forums are here for
