hey everyone I did this new music video for a band called Larger Than Life and I wanted some feedback

I shot it on dvx 100a

The video was taken into motion and a lot of effects were applied to it...just wondering your thoughts on the video as a whole and the overall look?

This video is amazing. I can see that you must have taken a lot of time planning and preparing for this. I am very interested in how you achieved that look. A++++ man. I look forward to seeing more from you. Once again, your awsome.

Awesome job on the video. That old film look looked really awesome. How did u go about making it? After Effects?

excellent work! matched the music really well...
did you shoot in really low light or is alot of that effects? looks great.

ps, i also enjoyed how the 'hinted streaming' of the quicktime started immediately without having to 'download' the data first... always gotta love that! instant viewing without waiting!
t

that was alright.

The visual style was ok, but it was not enough to hold the movie for the entire time. This was the videos biggest problem, the music starts and the video plays, and you say, that's a pretty cool thing they are doing with the video, but then after the first 30 seconds you start to look for something more. You want something to happen with the characters (the band), or even to mix up the shots a bit, perhaps even a story of some sort.

the structure of your video is simply a straight progression towards the finish line, which is the end of the song. It has no ups and downs or climaxes, just simply a visual style. If you were to watch that without the music you would get bored fast.

style is cool and usually what makes a music video good, but if you want a great one you need something more than that.

take it and your ideas to the next level,

hey guys thanks for the great feedback

or even just watching it.

on the old film effect it was done in motion not after effects. Just a plug in. My editor Graham really did a great job. I shot all the band members seperately with different lighting. top light one time then side strobe then back strobe then back light. We stuck mainly with the side strobe for most of it.

it was always just one light source. the strobes were from a party store 10 bucks each I used two of them on one side. top light was that work light from home depot 10 bucks also.

CodyBrown...I actually agree with a lot of what you say and actually am the guy that says pretty much what you say about once you have an intersting visual you need to do something more with it. I had this whole horror idea in a school with a bunch of kids. But I didn't shoot it. I had no time the band was leaving for tour so I decided to do only the performance part of the video. I felt it would work because the song was only 2 minutes long. And I hate just band performance but for 2 minutes I figured that would be fast enough for a viewer not to fall asleep plus I felt the style fit perfectly with the song so I forgave myself.

If you want to see some of my other videos go to my website....www.thebuzzla.com

you will see more than your fair share of band performance and story married together perfectly....check out OFFSET, LARGER THAN LIFE and YELLOWCARD...those are my favorites up there

thanks again

Ronster...ps yellowcard and hot water music were shot on dvx 100a for all you dvx nuts out there...the others were film

I like the concept with the filmstrips! However, it gave me a headace after awhile. It was kind of the same thing over and over again. Techincally you did a good job. The editing and effects were nice but now my head hurts. Overall it was okay.

The vids on your website are top notch. I am looking forward to seeing the new Hypnogaga and Midtown vids, also the Transitwar, however I know that you have a slow editor so it may take some time. Ha Ha. But, congrats your awsome dude.

I like the video and the song was pretty good too. Had a lot of energy and the sound was raw and not overproduced how it should be :). The only drawback for me was the fake old film hairs and dirt. a little here and there would be cool but it got old pretty quickly. Fake grain would be better IMO with just a small amount of hair and dirt thrown in. Awesome work!

i really liked your yellowcard video (really good concept) cept did u have to use a live version of the song? i think it would have been a lot more clean with a studio version. just my 2cents.

Thats basically what I thought as well.

Wow those effects were crazy cool it nearly blew my mind! (probably helped its 3:52 AM.) Keep up the great work!

hey ron, its daniel agustin.

its good to finally see the video. when anthony told me how it was shot i was interested on how you were gonna put it all together.

i liked some of the elements of the video, but i really wish you guys wouldve had time to shoot the narrative. even with the song so short, the effects (and possible over-use of them) still dont really keep the video interesting. after about 15 seconds you are waiting for something to change.

the one thing i REALLY didnt like was the invert (negative) effect. maybe its just me but i think they are way cheesy and the technique shouldve been left behind in the 80's. i dont know if that was your call or your editors.

other than that, i think this piece would work really well for an EPK or something, intercut with a bunch of different stuff. just to keep the audience from getting bored.

im excited to see the Transit War vidoe you did for them too. post it in this section when you got it done, or email me a link. danielagustin@cox.net

got any other videos lined up? take care.

I am tending to agree with the Cody and others on this one...the visual idea is interesting, but not enough to hold the attention of a viewer for the duration of the video. The scratches were also pretty distracting I think they could have been used in more moderation, at times they seemed very "plug-iny" and not very organic. Also for like the last half of the video, the projector effect seemed to just chill on the left hand side of the frame. It would have been cool to see that dance and move around more like it did in the begining.

There were a couple of effects I liked, for instance when Anthony kinda slides down into focus towards the begining. Also of the shots of Richard when at the begining of one of the choruses. I also thought the effect where Justin was singing on one side and Anthony was drumming on the other was interesting. But those effects would have been much more impactful if there was something else to the video. Good work on most of the VFX though keep it up.

PS:
I'm not really a fan of the negetive effect, I think The Offspring killed that one as far as music videos go...but hey, to each his own.

ronster,
I think it was great but instead of the entire thing being 100% in that effect yyou should maybe make it 65% with 35% of a "stable" story to it.....

Overall great concept!
