my new music video online.

Re: my new music video online.

I hate to say it, but this one didn't really grab me. You picked a cool location, and you had some great ideas for shots, but it somehow just didn't come together, in my opinion. Can't put my finger on it, obviously the crew knew what they were doing. Nice lighting.

I'm a big fan of black&white, so I was distracted with the transitions to b&w, thinking, 'she looks a lot better in high-contrast b&w, can't you stay that way?'

Re: my new music video online.

Cool video. Let me ask you this: at the beginning there were quite a few quick focus to blur shots (and back). Did you do that with the camera or did you do that in post?

Re: my new music video online.

I really liked the scene when she was playing guitar (in b/w) and the background kept changing from darker to lighter (I am sure there is a technical word for that but I don't know it).

Thanks for the compliments. The rack focus is done in camera but when the frame is fully blurred I did that in post.

Funny you mention that high contrast B&W. I was sure tempted to do it all that way like you said. Would have been interesting. I love B&W too. Just previewed a clients new music video all B&W all 16mm. nice, dark, grainy.

Re: my new music video online.

Really enjoyed the video. Liked the song too. She seemed to have a pretty good voice. I agree that the high contrast black and white stuff looked really strong.

I like the shots where the camera looks to be on the exterior and she appears in the windows on the second(?) floor.

Re: my new music video online.

Thanks for the nice words. The window was first floor in my friends gross old barn. It is hard to tell but it is two sets about a half mile apart. And they came with free cobwebs!

Re: my new music video online.

Blacky,  here is my honest critique.  Locations, wardrobe/costumes were very good.  Definitely fits the mood of the music (I did not like the music, but she has a good voice)  I felt the lighting was weak (natural lighting only?),  I could not really isolate some nice depth of field.  I agree with everyone on the whole black and white thing.  Those shots looked great and pyschologically agreed with the images and song.  I felt some of the shots were too long for a music video.  The way you framed the shots were fairly good.  Some nice track and dolly shots coupled with some jib shots would've taken this video to a totally different level.  I invested in a cobra crane mini jib (14ft. reach) for about $325 and built my own dolly from parts ordered at Glideshot.com for about $650.  Definitely worth the investment.  I bought the track they have as well.  You are certainly on the right "track".  Keep shooting!!

Re: my new music video online.

Checked out the Directors Cut and this is a much improved version. Seems tighter, more lively, quicker in pace and imagery. There wasnt as much POST tricks as last time and this helps keep some continuity in the eyes. I like this version much better. There seemed to be more Insert shots and more creativity used and it seemed to flow much better with the song.

I have to boost the 2.5 to a 3 on this one. Much improved. :)

Re: my new music video online.

Director's cut is much improved. I would lose all the color shots, they look to real. The b&w shots have an unreal quality that suits the music. I would also overexpose the b&w at times to accent the otherworldlyness. Just my noob opinion.
