My new film just won an award!

Just wanted to let everyone know that the indie sci-fi film I wrote, directed and edited, "It Came From Another World!" (which is a non-linear sequel to my first feature film "The Monster of Phantom Lake") just won Best Sci-Fi Feature at the 6th Annual ShockerFest film festival! All my films were shot on the DVX100a and edited using Vegas.

Just wanted to brag. If you're interested, check out my work (including the yet-to-be-released feature "Cave Women on Mars"). All my films are honest, black-and-white tributes to the sci-fi & horror films of the 1950's and have been winning awards and high praise literally all over the world. As a super genre fan, I sprinkle modern sci-fi references (especially Trek, Star Wars, Stargate & Ghostbusters) throughout my movies.

Here's another question for all the indie filmmakers out there: Why do you think so few indie filmmakers tackle science fiction? There are so many comedies, dramas and horror films being made but so few honest-to-goodness sci-fi films. Thoughts? Opinions?

Hey congratulations. Personally, I'm very interested in indie sci-fi. The producer on my last feature film and I are teaming together for a web series that is heavily influenced by Close Encounters. It's about UFO abduction.

Kick ass, Beeblebrox (nice name, too. LOVE Douglas Adams' stuff). I'd love to hear more about your idea. Close Encounters is one of my favorite sci-fi movies.

We've already shot the pilot. I've been working on it on and off in post, but I've been too busy to really finish it up. We're hoping to launch early next year with at least 3 episodes done, with each episode running about 3 minutes.

Here's a promo pic:

Congrats SaintEuphoria! In answer to your question, in my opinion people don't tackle sci-fi as much simply because it's harder to produce 'reasonable' FX on micro-budgets. I'm not saying all sci-fi has to have FX, and some times they don't need any at all, but people can get scared off with the prospect of looking out of their depth. It is also harder to script for most writers, more so than drama and horror?

Bragging rights, man, congrats again :)

Thanks, Newt. Me, I love sci-fi and wish more indie filmmakers were out there making it. Like you said, it doesn't require FX if you do it right. Look at a movie like Primer, which was a straight up, hard sci-fi indie that didn't really use any real special effects and it was great. I suppose my sci-fi CAN look cheesy since that's what I'm going for, but still. I'd love to see a dedicated filmmaker (or group of filmmakers) tackle a hardcore sci-fi indie. I'm interested. Anyone else?

Sounds really cool man I love sci-fi and Close Encounters is my favorite sci-fi film. I'm actually working on a UFO documentary for a well known Ufologist. Do you have any more info or a pic/trailer for you web show. Congrats on the award Saint.

I'd love to hear more about your UFO doc, tripleJ. I recently saw something on the History channel about UFO's where they played actual cockpit recordings from pilots and the space shuttle when they've come in contact with a UFO. The freakiest one involved an astronaut on the shuttle that was actually recorded saying "We are still in observance of the alien spacecraft."
