My New Camera !

Scott, do you see the card reader as an advantage when you have more cards and can swap them, or is it better even w/ one card to use the reader instead of downloading from the camera's USB port?
 
Use the reader it is better. Faster data transfer then off the cam.

Also, tri-pod, I bought a cartoni w/ Fluid head 6 months ago. Love it, Love it!

All these are OK for the 301/370 but if you can go to a libec H70 head it will be even better but a lot greater cost as will be vinten or sachtler etc.

I use the Libec RS-450M (RH45 head) and it seems very well suited for this camera, the counterbalance adjusts just fine and it seems to be very stable too.

Hi All, Powerdog, I think the reader will be an advantage, I've heard the transfer times using the reader is a lot greater than using the camera. My thinking now is acquire at least one more P2 card so I can “hot swap” depending on the situation. I do not have a laptop I use a MacPro. Has anyone used a Panasonic MSU10 memory card recorder ( expensive! ) or maybe a little “Nexto” video storage device ( lot cheaper ). Thanks everyone for the fluid head suggestions, I’m trying not to break the bank. Just wondering, how much under the stated max weight do you need to be? My 501 head says max weight is 13.2 lbs, I weighted the HPX370 with battery and tripod plate and it weighs 13.5 lbs, the result when you put the camera on the head is not pretty, lock the drag all the way down and don’t get too far away. Is that 13.2 lbs measured at the top of the head, or does the height of the camera above the head make a difference ( raising the center of gravity )? I would think that the difference between 13.2 and 13.5 it would be possible to use the 501 in a pinch. Or am I over thinking this whole thing?

use the 501 in a pinch,...? Sure. But don't make it your main setup. Get a good set of sticks that can easily support your cam weight and a little more. You'll be glad you did.
 
I had a manfrotto 503 and recently looked at my friends 504 and they are no where near as good as the Libec's.

The 501 could be used at a pinch but it is your risk, personally I wouldn't put any camera the size of the 300/301 on a manfrotto of any type .
 
Thanks all, I have a old Bogen tripod from years ago. This thing is a least
20 years old, built like a tank ( weights like one too ). I think I could put
my truck on it if I could mount it. All I really need is a good fluid head.
This is not the time to cut corners, hopefully this head will last as log as
the sticks.

Any theories on why the reader is faster than the cam? I would have thought both are pulling the same data through the same USB. Does the cam impose some unnecessary processing of the data?

Also, do we know the actual time diff for, say, 32GB?
 
A 32 GB card transferred off the cam will take 65min.
A 32 GB card transferred from the card reader will take approx. 34min.
 
Hm, if i connect the Cam as a USB-Device to my Computer, a 16 GB Card needs about 11 Minutes.
If you use the Cam as USB-Host, and Data-Verifying is enabled, it takes MUCH longer.
 
Being honest, i dont know.... I have not much experience with copying directly from the Cam as USB-Host, i just tested it once. Normally i use a Notebook with PCMCIA-Slot and Teracopy installed as Copy-Station or the Cam as USB-Device.
It should work without problems, if Data-Verifying is disabled. But for a safer Feeling, i would leave it enabled if Time is no Problem....
 
I have been thinking about my work flow in the field, I don’t do weddings or have a need for instant editing in the field. I did not want to purchase enough P2 cards to make make it back to my MacPro, and I did not want to buy a expensive P2 memory recorder. Digging thru the manual I discovered just what Emmet was talking about. Probability everyone knows this already but I connected a plain old external USB 2.0 disk drive I had to my HPX370 using the 370 as USB Host and copied the card to the disk drive. It was not fast but easy. The disk drive did not even need a power supply, the USB port provided power. You can pick these drives cheep.

A lot of the time I'm going to have the 370 shoulder mounted and be working alone (no assistant, no sound guy, nothing), so I think the options for offloading are pretty limited. Can't see using an external drive or even changing cards while I'm operating the camera.

I'm thinking I should invest in a 64GB card and look at any breaks in the action as chances to stop and offload.
 
I have 2 64 gig cards, and if I know I'm going to have to offload in the field while I'm shooting, I take my laptop and my single card reader. And, very importantly, I have the cards set up without spanning enabled. If I know I have enough space for the day on location, and I need to shoot on location again the next day, I wait until the end of the day and either attach a buss powered USB drive directly to the camera, or use the drive with my laptop and the card reader. We have 4 multi-day shoots out of the country coming up, with 3 HPX-370s for each, so we'll need a very smooth off-loading plan for each day. Each camera has a single card reader, but we weren't planning to bring 3 laptops.

There actually are people who are dedicated to P2 card management.
I also have 2 64gig cards which is enough for about 2 hours & 20 minutes of recording time in 1080p25, which from my experience is enough for most jobs without having to offload on location, but it really depends on your needs.
 
I wish the budget allowed for a dedicated P2 person. 12 hour days, 3 cameras, and 6-7 days at a time in a foreign country make for a lot of P2 quality-time. :) I'd also like the faster 5 card reader, maybe next Christmas.

Sounds rough... in case of an emergency, you can always firewire the camera to a laptop and record DVCPRO HD directly to it.
