Khmuse,

I agree with your assessment of dimmers for main light sources, but disagree with you in their use as I've outlined. As for the practical, it's common to dim those. Yes, you could also replace the bulbs with those of lesser intensity, but really all you want is for them to seem on. Dimming the already warm practical down a bit, with better ratios on your main lights, will not result in them seeming "off" color wise. Dimming the hair light WILL result in a warmer color temperature - something that can be highly desirable on a brunette. Try it sometime. As I said, I also like adding a touch of blue to the hair lights of blondes. Certainly neither of these techniques is mandatory, but they work well creatively - especially the warmer light on the brunette.

Hey Matt,

Thanks for the comments, but if you reread my post, you will notice that I wasn't discounting the idea of using a dimmer on the practical, but on his theatrical lights. I use dimmers (actually, I don' t like dimmers but use a Variac instead as they are much quieter) on practicals frequently to warm them up a bit but I also keep a good assortment of globes (everything from little appliance ones up to ECAs) to relamp practicals as needed. I have used 1/2 CTB or 1/2 CTO on kickers on a few occasions, to give a bit more separation from the background. Never consciously considered the concept of different color temps for different hair colors (but I have gone one way or the other in different situations), so I will certainly give that a try at some point in time.

Always good to hear of a new idea when it comes to lighting (which seems to be one of the areas where creative thinking can go a long way).

well thats surprisingly his natural skintone, he's been a roofer his whole life and his skin is pretty close to that!!

I would go for something like that (try to determine where the light is comming from):

You look like a character actor I recognize from TV/film, only you look younger -- no clue what the guy's name is.
