Ok, just opened the box like a kid at Christmas... got it all set up, turned it on and tried zooming a few times. There is a loud whine as it zooms in and out. Loud enough that I can see the sound pick up over the onboard mic. I pulled out my DVX100a just to verify that it wasn't me... and it was quiet as heck. Has anyone else experienced this... or is it just lucky old me???? Damn it. Just to clarify, it isn't like you have to stand within six inches to hear it. In a quiet room, you can stand several feet back and hear it.

What would you do?

Don't zoom! :)
I had a demo unit for a week and didn't notice much zoom noise. In fact, I think the propaganda mentioned the zoom was quieted. (not sure here I read it).
Anyone else?

I don't usually zoom at all while shooting, but in doing commercials I am sometimes asked to. I even notice a mechanical hum while it's autofocusing... and no, I don't usually leave this on -- but in getting new gear I usually test everything. My DVX is quiet as hell compared to this. I am not even sure who to complain to now -- where I bought it or Panasonic. I don't really think I should be forced to keep a unit if it needs repairs straight out of the box.
