My Latest Failure...err Music Vid HELP PLZ

Okay so I'm no stranger to failure, but this is the first time I've encountered it in this form. This video which I just got finished shooting is edited in rough form and before I showed it to anyone I thought it wasnt too bad, and I'm normally pretty spot on with my assesments. But last night right after finishing the rough copy I sent it to a few of my friends and noone understood it and I got the feeling they just plain didnt like it. Now all of the people I sent it to werent in to that style of music so that might have influenced them but I'm bothered by the fact that people were so put off by the fact that the story is somewhat ambiguous. I wanted to do a concept that was somewhat ambiguous and had lots of little stories loosely linked but all pertaining in some way to the lyrics. But I'm starting to see now that that was probably a bad idea. Its rough thinking that you have something decent and being told its totally worthless, and it honestly scares me. This is the first time this has happened and its making me doubt that I even have potential to succeed as a filmmaker. Don't get me wrong I'm not going to quit, just I'm now getting doubtfull that I can ever really be good.

Please take a look at this! Remember its in rough form so alot of the cuts ill make a little more rythmical and ill swap out some of the poorer shots and of course do color correction and a few other things to it. I want to know your honest oppinion on this, and dont worry you wont offend, all I have heard so far is that its horrible so you cant say much worse. But I respect you all for your filmmaking expertise so I'd like to hear some in depth feedback if possible. I'd also like to know if it is worth me putting too much more time into it or just to give up and do the minimum. Also any suggestions on how to make a storyline more clear because I guess thats what people want would be welcome.

Thanks and please take a look, I need your help,

Chris

sorry for no direct link but the upload site prohibits it.

Just watched it. I think you are a bit too paranoid considering the video wasn't bad at all. The story didn't make much sense to me, but most music videos never do anyway.

If you are really touchy about it, I would highly suggest making another cut - one without any of the "changing" in the intro and outro and none of the story line. Just the guys rocking. I don't see anything wrong with that.

The video wasn't at all terrible. I wouldn't say it is a bad video, I just thought there was waaaaay too much going on with the story. Especially since the guys all kind of looked the same to me.

Well I'm glad not everyone hates it i guess, although people into film seem to like it more than others. I'm still very concerned about this though so if anyone could take a look and give some in depth feedback that would be great.

Why was this moved?? This is shot with a DVX100a, and since there are about a million mirror shots in the vid i can prove it if need be....can somone please move it back to the DVX forum?

Does it really look that poorly shot? eek

hey man, atleast you're going out there and doing it.

just keep shooting them out and you'll get better.. you won't make the same mistakes again

Assuming I watched the right video ("anticipate rough copy"), I thought a lot of the shots looked pro. Especially the band/crowd shots with the camera on the jib. I also liked your dolly shots when you tracked the waitor walking. Like others have said above, I never really try to figure out the story line for vids like this, so it wasn't unusual that I didn't understand what was going on with the people. I wouldn't have the blinks to black at the restraunt scene, and less of the static shots of in front of the mirror. Also maybe less sped up motion, like when he puts on his tie. I think sped up footage can often look ameteur. Other than that, I thought it was a good video.

By the way, how did you light the parking lot scene? And who are all those extras?

Mike

I thought the shots looked great but maybe you're right that there's too many stories going on. Maybe stay with the band in the parking lot stuff, the hallway with the guys switching around, a few of the mirror shots? I'd try thinning down the variety of shots and sticking with the best of a fewer themes. The whole thing beats any of my work so far so I'm not one to talk too much...

I liked the way you described it... "änother failure"... It just sounds like a scientist doing an experiment and everything went Kaboom...

As for the video... Still haven't seen it. Will look at it later and comment.

Also, never lose trust on your "gut feeling". If you do, you'll start questioning everything you do, you'll not know what to shoot, and your work will lose "your soul". Listen to some of the criticism, but believe in yourself and trust yourself.

The video looked fine overall.
Editing and camerawork were good.
Lighting in the enterior scenes was to hard imo, you seldom find lights shooting straight at your face without some kind of diffusion indoors.
What was really missing for me were CUs of the other bandmembers in the outdoor/parkinglot performance.
Additionally (intentionally?) they wear all similar clothes, so they are somehow degraded to background dancers.
As a guitarplayer or drummer, I would be pissed,.
Of course the focus is always on the vocals, but in the wide shots you can see that the others were performing their rears off, doing all that (imo overused and artificial) moves this kind of bands like to do these days.
If you have those CUs, I´d put them in.
And yeah, I also didn´t get all the stories, maybe kick the restaurant one out...?

Yea, overall it's a really good shoot. Just to echo more of what everyone else has said already: music videos tend not to make sense anyway! so don't sweat it.

although, that is a bad tendancy that we as filmmakers should try to break out of. I would suggest to try and at least cut down on the amount of storys going on. maybe just focus on one or two. overall you have some really good material to work with and you should probably just get a goodnight sleep, take a look at the footage some more later, go for a walk and rethink your editing concept, then go back and make a completely new cut. that's my take on things. i dont know what kind of deadline you're under. but if you can take a day off away from it and still have time to do a new cut, i think that would be best. it still doesn't look half-bad. keep it up, and you'll just become better with every mistake you make. hope everything turns out ok!
