MY HVX200 Breakdown.

HDkilledFILM.

Burnin' down the House
First off, Yeah, the camera is everything it should be. 100% floored by the camera and I am glad I took the risk and gave panasonic the benifit of the doubt and pre ordered. The wait was worth it. The noise issue that I'm hearing from so many people on these boards was a non issue. The "Noise" that I did see was not anything that I have been hearing about the camera all over the internet. I felt like I walked into a movie which won an oscar, got trashed by a bunch of people who I respect (which lowered my expectations) and was suprised by how good it was. Here are my limited gripes:

exposure wheel, over sensitive.

View finder, too small of an image for my tastes (hard to focus this way).

Flip out monitor, LCD not as sharp which make focusing harder than it needs to be (Buying an onboard, everyone is saying this).

I really wish that the lens had a more wide angle (century op, please sell me one) The widest seems to be just not enough.

so with that out of the way here is what the camera does get right:

DVX feel. COLOR!!!!! My wife's family owns an appliance store and I had the tests up on the 55' plasma through my PB and IT looked killer! P2 kicks ass, no way will I ever shoot to tape again. Transfering is way faster than real time. No dropped frames! Clips ready to edit in FCP once imported! Camera is built like a real pro, the body is solid and hand holding it is easier for me because it feels more like a pro camera than a toy. I know this is not anything to do with performance but on a side note the camera looks killer!!!!!!!!!!! Images of this camera do not do it justice. Jan is due for a beer. I'll write more later, but for now I'm going to go hold her..........

When you said "breakdown" in your title, I assumed you meant "nervous breakdown", like I'm seeing from a lot of the posters going nuts on each other.

Thanks for the overview of your experience! Very appreciated.

Thanks for the feedback . I have been somewhat amused by all the overreactions to the noise issue. I can hardly wait !

Thanks for taking the time to post the review. Every one is like gold right now since there have been so few. Hey, you must be the first one in Philly with an HVX! I'm in the Philly area too - Delaware County. Good luck with it!

I'm the only one I know of. I'm shooting a feature on it in Febuary, do you know of any good special effects make up guys in the area? I'm willing to pay so $$$, not too much but some. I'm going to post some still maybe tomorrow or in the next few days.

Nice report!

The noise on the HVX200 is no different than the XLH1. My findings are they're in the same ballpark. Plus compression codec artifacts and noise are different too among these cameras.

The HVX200 sure has one bitchin image, that's for sure. My DVX100 ( as well the XL2 ) was my favorite camera of the small form professional cameras. I look at DVX footage I shot from years ago and it still rocks. An HD version of the DVX; you can't go wrong with that.

Your gripes about the VF are right. I think it's way to small. Maybe a third party company can develop a VF attachment that replaces the one on the HVX that has a built in 2x or 4x magnifier to blow up the VF lcd.

Anyways, thanks for the report.

That really sucks about the iris wheel. Keeping the iris similar to the DVX was one of my main concerns because I adjust it so much on the fly.

Hmm . . . I think her husband may have something to say about that.

LOL. Thanks for the report.

Good review. I know of a great special effects and spfx makeup guy. He is an instructor at the Tom Savine School in Pennsylvania somewhere. I think it's Philly. Let me know what you need and I can try and track him down. He does top notch stuff.

Congrats on the camera. I knew from seeing it that the noise wasn't an issue. just a bunch of people having to ***** about something... Especially the Canon guys who seem to be feeling like a red-headed step child around the boards and forums. People will always attack the apparant leader.. tech wise. It's also nice that it's not a Sony for once.

Great report HDkillfilm, congrats on your purchase. To answer your question about a fx guy. i would recommend Kier Moreno, he is in NYC, but he is worth it. I just wrapped a horror film with him this past November. He did awesome work for the tight but we were on, and he made my job as a DP easier by working with my lighting scheme. You can see a trailer for the movie a www.redscreamfilms.com

I think his website is http://www.fakepope.com/keir/

BTW, if you need a DP, i would be interested. you can email me at mattsdp@gmail.com

Thanks so much for the referals guys that helps alot to even have leads. I'm going to DP this one but I might need help with a Gaffer if your interested hit me up @ adam@themororeflex.com

oh BTW I'm holding my HVX not Jan, my wife would cut my junk off.

isn't the stock hvx fairly wide? wider than the dvx isn't it? surprised to hear that gripe.

I'm just been spoiled with my optex 4mm prime...........

gone forever......................

:undecided

HVX200 is still my new love.

Let's have some footage my friend, I'm dying to see more and I'm sure it'll ease alot of impatient people, such as myself, as well.

In 16:9 mode the HVX is significantly wider than the DVX or any other camera with stock lens.

But that may not make it wide enough; I frequently used a .6 wide-angle adapter on my DVX.

Anyone have hosting space that I could email them a QT file?
