Finally had the oportunity to see the HVX footage in a professional environment (ntsc model). Thanks to the fine people of Digital Magic in HK for the small screening. I've also tried to clear my doubts of 25p vs 24p. Let's start with the later.
I've see a realtime conversion on an HDCAM deck of footage recorded in both 24p (film) and 25p (HDV) converted to the hdcam format. This conversion was done realtime with the deck. Perfect playback in both formats, and no resolution loss whatsoever. 60p to 50i is a problem and requires a much more complicated process. What this means is: everyone, shoot 24p or 25p. There's no advantages or disadvantages in therms of picture quality. It looks the same, and converts perfectly. Audio part was something I didn't have time to check.
HVX vs HDV camera (fx1 and z1).- NO COMPARISON. HVX beats fx1 in colour, and looks the same resolution wise. The HVX footage feels a lot more richer than the HDV footage. HDV looks like DV in High Resolution. DVCPROHD looks a lot better than HD DV. More like dvcpro 50 HD.
Camera in a studio with dramatic lighting looks GREAT. No noise issues whatsoever. However, picture seems to look more noisy on 1080p compared to 720p. Engineers suggested me that shooting 1080p wouldn't give me any major advantage for film blowup. They are going to try to test this. I'll be seeing this screening later- in the middle of March. For natural exterior scenes (HK Urban center viewed), the picture looks rich and detailed.
Overall, people should really see the HVX picture side to side with the competition. Even tough I've only seen HVX compared to the Z1 (with color correction and post produced!), the HVX picture is a lot more rich and film like. It just feels a lot less compressed in the colour department (I know the dvcprohd compression is actually more than the mpeg 2 compression), but this is how I react to the picture.
The HVX is going to be my next camera. However, I have to wait for the Pal model, since even tough I'm not losing much converting 24p to 25p, I certainly won't be able to do a good affordable conversion from 60p to 50i, or 60i to 50i.
