My HMC40 video looks like karp

Just to ask... have you watched the HMC40 clips outside of the timeline and/or the final export? Do they look like crap at their full resolution, in their original format?

I know this is a bit late in the game to be adding my two cents worth, but I personally would never edit a .mts file to begin with... even if your software will accept it. It'd be like trying to edit with a zipped file... Try MPEG Slipstream, it's free and I've been using it for a while for software that's compressed and needs to be unpacked for editing. I had to do the same with some creppy flip camera footage that a client gave me to use(nightmare). I use either FCP or Premiere Pro to transfer and transcode my .mts files to an editable format, then edit away. Hope that helps

I agree with the others:
1. get a larger memory card, shoot in a higher quality setting
2. See if your workflow can be improved by switching from Pinnacle to EDIUS Neo or maybe Sony Vegas. There is some cost and training involved but could be better for the long run. You can find Neo on eBay for under $100.

One other thought, if you do in fact need these 3 sources in two video tracks why not switch your processing order? Combine the JVC and GS500 footage and export that combined footage. Then, in new project put your untoched HMC40 footage together with the combo footage.

My footage looks like carp. Blame the cam, never fails.

I am shooting 60i because it gives me the longest record times. A deposition can go on for 3-4 hours. Do you all understand that???? And it is NOT desirable to interrupt a lawyers line of questioning to change a flippin card or tape.
A deposition doesnt have to have all the hairs visible from the persons nose. Let me clue you into something. In court, they don't use GLORIOUS HD players. They don't use Blu Ray players in a lawyers office either. MANY times, MANY times, they dont even watch the damn DVD that I get paid to make because they LITIGATE the case before it goes to court.

I used to shoot deps on DVCam... I made sure the lawyers understood ahead of time that it was a 1 or 2 hour tape. I had little note cards with minute warnings. But if the tape was about to run out, I politely informed them that I needed to swap cards. Maybe you're just dealing with a different type of lawyer crowd, but it really isn't that big a deal to tell them you need to swap tapes. Honestly, I'm surprised opposing counsel would allow a deposition to go 3-4 hours without a break. That is rough on the witness.

That said, use HG mode, not HE. That should get you a little over 2 1/2 hours of footage on a 16gb card that looks significantly better. Better yet, get a 32 like others have said. That will yield almost five hours.

Also, your other two cameras, if I'm not mistaken, are Standard Def... one DV, the other Mpeg 2. But either way, that is huge. Downconverting HD to SD isn't as simple as clicking a button, and can be kind of tricky. And if the software you're using isn't up to the task, it can make it look like... well... Blaine's carp. Like others have said, if you have Edius, I would look at using that. Honestly, it will save you a lot of headaches, methinks.

While I'm thinking about it... go download Panasonics free AVCHD to DVCProHD converter. There is an option to convert 1080i footage like yours to SD DV-AVI. That might actually help you out a lot, as you won't be mixing SD and HD in Pinnacle... you can keep it all SD in the same timeline.

So you cant read? Doesnt look like it. If you could read, you would have read my first post.

I clearly said, "What am I doing wrong?" Did you learn the meaning of "I" when you were in school.

Just exactly who blamed the cam? You are an flippin idiot. Taking shots at me like that.
I knew I was using the settings wrong somewhere in the camera and asked what I was doing that caused this? I WAS looking for some help and a few of you gave me exactly what I needed to improve the quality of my output.

But more of you than I figured attacked me. Theres always an idiot and always some trolls, but WTH? Is there no moderator? What kind of parents raised you to attack people like this?

Can anyone lock this frekking thread????????????????????????

With respect... no one attacked you. Someone made a comment, Blaine posted a picture of a carp (which I thought was funny), and you got super defensive in a way that came across as a somewhat condescending, especially when people started asking technical questions you didn't know the answer to.

Grant was making a joke in reference to Blaine's picture. I don't think it was directed at you personally.

Please chill out and stop being so defensive. If you feel someone else is attacking you, calling them all sort's of names isn't going to help your cause. Stop assuming that people making jokes or asking technical questions are attacking you. Most of the people gave you good advice, so if you feel that someone is being a troll, don't feed them and just thank the folks being helpful.
