My first vid with DVX100B

FOKUSED

New member
Hello Everyone,

I just want to start off by saying thank you to everyone on here. I have been browsing this forum for about 6 months when I first started to look at getting a new camera. With all the information on here I purchased the 100B 2 months ago.

This is my first footage from this camera (24p) and my first time with FCP. Now I do consider myself to have thick skin, but not to thick.. So suggestions, comments, and input are all welcomed.

Since I shot this and reviewed it, I have purchased a tri-pod, Barry Green's book, and a years worth of "one to one" sessions at my local apple store for FCP. Thanks again to all the people that take time to supply their information, advise and experience to this site :dankk2:

I personally felt that the shots looked fine as did the editing.

I would recommend staying on the talking subjects a bit better though. When someone is talking to the camera, it is better to see their full face at least. If the shot is wider, give them a little headroom so you can see the top of their heads and it doesn't get cut-off.

The one weak spot was the audio. That is a common trouble spot, especially when you are running solo.

I would recommend either a dedicated audio person with a good boom mic, use of a lavalier mic attached to the person you are interviewing, or an outboard mic which has a more directional pick-up pattern (if you are shooting solo). The built-in camera mic just isn't much good for anything more than ambient noise.

I think you did a spectacular job for your first time out :)

Keep up the good work!

The action shots were good............Have to agree about the audio, either get a lav mic on the subjects or at least a shotgun over them to get more consistant audio...........pretty cool footage.

Great first try! Really.

Audio - ditto to other comments.
It is worth more than its weight in GOLD to have a handy wireless lav in your pocket.
Take the extra minute to rig your speaker up- it'll save the day (and then some).

Don't have that? then a wired lav (ECM55's are great and relatively inexpensive).

PUH-LEASE; run your background music down to near NULL when you're having someone speak in front of the camera.
It's annoying as hell trying to cipher the spoken word from the screamed word of some cat banging away on a guitar in the BG.

Other than that- dang, good start!
Can't wait to see what you end up with as you continue to work with the camera and FCP.

Thank you guys so so much. I have to admit, I almost didnt hit the submit button for this thread as there are so many great videographers on this site and I am novice in comparison. I will have to say though, looking back I am glad I did. As I mentioned in the first post, I have really learned a lot from everyone on here.

I am going to take all the suggestions and implement them in my next short and show you all something 10x better next time around :)

As for the LAV's, I am little tapped with the purchase of the tripod and head I bought. Is B+H going to be the best place to look for those? There is a Sammy's camera somewhat close to where I live so I check there to get an idea on cost.

Thanks to everyone that took the time to write a response !!!

i'd check forums like this one (there are lots- COW is one with a good Classified section).
there are audio forums like this too- where you can find good things at a fair price.
and, of course, there's good ol' eBay!

i've always liked the sony ecm's (there are a series of them- i have 2 ECM 55B's, for instance).
but my pocket magic is a great little AKG that cost about $100 new. thing has saved my butt quite a few times!

like most things, there is a sliding scale of value in proportion to cost.
Samson makes okay wireless stuff, Azden too. Perfectly okay models available for what a carton of smokes costs (if one partakes in such things).

there are also some folks who frequent here who can guide you in this regard, as audio is their speciality. might check with them too.
check here in 'filmmaking'>'audio'.

i have a saying:
good audio can sell bad video all day long.
bad audio don't sell sht.
