My first screen grabs and link to mini movie

Here is a sample screen grab from a 1 minute short that I made within the first few days of having my dvx. Please bear in mind that (a) I don't have any "formal" training. (or "informal" training for that matter) (b) I never owned a video camera of any type. (c) I have only owned this dvx for less than a week, finally I've had to try to learn how to use the camera, use a nle and a compression software that I have no experience in.

So remember when you tread on my dreams to tread softly. But please do give me constructive criticism, because I know that I need help.

p.s Big thanks to David who gave me plenty of encouragement and advice to using Vegas. And the many others who have keep encouraging me to give this whole experience a try.

If anyone is interesting in seeing the mini movie then here are the links

http://home.comcast.net/~thistlebop/dvxstuff/Backyard_Blues_Med.wmv

http://home.comcast.net/~thistlebop/dvxstuff/Backyard_Blues_Lg.wmv

The second one is the best quality but is almost 10 megs, so I understand if no one wants to view it. Also, sorry but both files are Windows Media. I wasn't able to convert it to Quicktime.

Thanks for all the kind comments.

Sorry the files are as big as they are. I'm still trying to learn how to compress the video without losing too much quality.

The website is just an old project that I put togeather as a joke when I first got Comcast. But thanks for the positive feedback on it. :)

Re: My first screen grabs and link to mini movie

I'm downloading it now (damn 56k), will comment when i return :)

edit: WOW! Amazing scenery, maybe some color correction would've looked better (in my sole opinion), but then after thinking about it, I liked the natural look. It was some VERY beautiful scenery, and some nice framing on just about every shot. just wondering, what state do you live in? or at least region, i'm wondering how you have such amazing subjects to shoot in your backyard. perhaps it would work for a kickback horror movie? Well either way, very nice footage. If you have any questions about vegas, let me know, i've been using it since i had to upgrade from 3 to 4. Keep up the good work.

Re: My first screen grabs and link to mini movie

sweet! cool shot of the cloud reflections in the water.

I'll respond to you in the Vegas forum about creating QT files, and settings etc...

Josh, thanks for the nice comments. I agree with you about the Color Correction, but to be honest I don't have any experience doing it, so I tried to do it all "in camera" with varying results.
As to where I live. I live in the same state as Disjecta, Washington State. I am way out in the boonies, past a small town named Graham.

Re: My first screen grabs and link to mini movie

Thistlebop,

Nice job and very sombre and suitable soundtrack.

When you get used to the camera and your NLE, try some camera movement and some slightly shorter edits. It's amazing how much the human eye can absorb in a short moment. Also, use the music as a guide for your edits. Listen to it critically and feel where a chord or a beat changes and let your transitions fall there....

I think you are very talented and look forward to more of your work.

Thanks for sharing.

Re: My first screen grabs and link to mini movie

nice work,

I agree with disjecta, a bit of movement can spice your good work up even more! I can allready visualize the Fence with a nice dolly shot, man that will look good !!!

Re: My first screen grabs and link to mini movie

Thanks for all the positive comments.

I totally agree that some camera movement would of been nice. But I didn't have a tripod when I shot this. Had to make out with hand held and used alot of magazines and books situated on a chair, bench, wood stump or whatever was handy for the rest of the shots. ;D

I finally got my Tripod though from EVS, so hopefully the next short that I film will have a few pans if nothing else... :)

Re: My first screen grabs and link to mini movie

Beautiful work, Thistlebop - you're clearly one of those people who just plain DESERVE this camera... ;)

Good luck in the future and keep posting your A* work!

Re: My first screen grabs and link to mini movie

Great colors in the shots.

Just don't throw any geese into the mix or disjecta will be coming after you! ;)

Re: My first screen grabs and link to mini movie

Bop, Just so you know if those are your very first shots, you are on your way. I agree with camera movement next time just do it hand held. Just don't drink to much coffee before you shoot up there in Washington. Good Job!

Re: My first screen grabs and link to mini movie

I don't have speakers so I hummed to myself but I still loved the shots. You capture landscape very well. Is your profession in architecture or something? Cheers.

I would like to know your camera file settings if you remember them. I've made my guesses and I'm very curious. I'm a video newbie too. Though I have worked with celluloid before so I'm an in camera snob ;D . Being able to previsualize something and then getting it correctly (if possible) the first time is sweet science. This is only 50 percent though. The other half would originate from spontenaity in myoppion.

I tried to get a few ducks and geese into the shots actually, but as soon as I pointed my camera at them, they would swim or fly away. I could of sworn that I heard on of them say something like "Local Duck Union #404... blah blah blah... against the rules... Disjecta pays more... etc etc".

I think its a conspiracy ! :)
