My first reel... Looking for input!

Its very basic, no fancy motion graphics or transitions. Just trying to show my ability to move a camera and light a scene. All of the footage was shot on a naked HVX200, naked DVX100b, Bolex 16mm and Arri S 16mm.

I would like some feedback, as I have not gotten much constructive criticism.

Thanks!

The quality of your images is good, but for a demo reel I would try to emphasize more variety in the selection of your shots to showcase your abilities. Maybe some of the selections could be shorter, as well. The black and white scenes didn't do much for me. Good luck to you.

Kind of hard to comment without knowing your actual purpose, so take this as just a kind of random drive-by.

Many of the shots were quite good - the type that pulls you into the story. Shows that you do have a skill set.

Some were actually pretty ho-hum, why are we looking at this kind of filler. Not bad, but really don't bring anything to the table either.

The very beginning shots had some camera jiggle - a huge no-no, almost lost me right there.

I was actually ok with the B&W shots, street scenes were good, dude doing math by the a/c started ok but fell apart very quickly.

As I said, hard to comment without a purpose, and purely my own very humble opinion. I guess how I'd summarize is you do have talent, I'd like to see more, but this doesn't really showcase it.

Best wishes & keep posting.:beer:

Edit - my bad, you did actually state why you posted. I guess I'd say the clips varied a lot - from very good to well, not so good - so I guess I'd say it's probably not what you'd want to put forth as a showcase. The danger with this type of post is it leaves one wondering - was it skill or was it luck? I'm guessing skill, but . . .

Again, best wishes & keep shooting!

Thanks a lot for taking a look. The input means a lot!

I will try to include more variety in my shooting as I go along. That is certainly something that I need to work towards.

Some very captivating images in there.

But... why the guys with handlebar mustaches? (I'm sure you have a reason)

I'd tighten up the editing a little too, as long as the image has a chance to be absorbed or a movement resolves.

When the door opens (cool shot/light) at 1:00, cut before it bounces back.

Pool table at 2:33 Why is the camera panning? Nice shot, too long, pick it up when the hand starts sliding down the table?

It can be shorter and better with a little tightening.
