my first project -- "still human"

Re: my first project -- "still human"

Overall that was really well done, and your friend seems like a good actor, too. The fact that it was a random, disconnected, scene made it seem sort of strange, but if you made a longer movie of that quality, I'd be incredibly impressed.

Btw, how did you pull off those smooth pans? They were very nicely done whereas all my pans in 24p mode look rough and uneven. Do you just have a very steady hand and a nice tripod or is it more than that?

Anyhow, keep up the good work. Very nicely done.

Re: my first project -- "still human"

Thanks for the encouraging words. Agree it's a bit disconnected, but that is by design so I don't feel too bad about it.

For most of the shoot the camera was on a jib. Almost all of the camera movement is a result of the jib rather than the fluid head. The Losmandy Porta-Jib is a very nice piece of equipment. Folds down to almost nothing, beautiful smooth action.

Re: my first project -- "still human"

Great cinematography in this one! Good lighting and smooth smooth pans. How much do one of those porta-jibs go for?

Re: my first project -- "still human"

Thanks.

Actually, I have the Porta-Jib Traveller, which is a smaller than the Porta-Jib. I think it was about $2300. One nice thing about the Traveller is that it telescopes, which allows you to configure it as a very small jib. Convenient in tight interiors.

Re: my first project -- "still human"

Holy Cow! No way am i gonna justify that to the girlfriend!

Edit: Cool, thanks for the link Terry

;D

Re: my first project -- "still human"

Yeah, I've played with the EZ FX jib and liked it a lot. Almost bought it, in fact, but went with the Losmandy instead.

Re: my first project -- "still human"

That's funny. I was entertaining the thought of the Losmandy (Porta-Jib) and the Advanta-Jib but decided on the EZ FX.

;D

Re: my first project -- "still human"

See this is what happens when you invest money on a good product. If this was shot handy cam style I would be inclined not to like it (as much). However the smooth motion of the pans made it so much more . . . . Pro like :)

Good job.

Re: my first project -- "still human"

Come to think of it, there is one tip I have to smooth out pans: don't use the end of the handle on your fluid head. I find that setting the head to the highest resistance and pushing on the part of the bar that's closer to the head requires much more force but the pan comes out smoother.

Note that I am quite new at this, so take my advice with a grain of salt. I do use the end of the bar when framing shots, of course, but when rolling I try to stay away from it.

Re: my first project -- "still human"

That's a good point, John.

Sometimes you need to do a small pan when your zoomed in all or most of the way.

Sometimes, I'll just wrap both hands around the head and twist slowly... thus panning.

Re: my first project -- "still human"

is it me or does the actor resemble cris walken in voice and facial expressions?

Re: my first project -- "still human"

Excellent little short. Awesome camera movement to give the whole clip a pro feel. The only thing I would maybe do differently is the lighting. It was a little too flat for my taste. Especially with something as 'sinister' feeling as this, I would maybe have it a little darker in the room with more hard lights and shadows.

Awesome camera movement, though. Great work.

Re: my first project -- "still human"

Thanks.

Did the music myself with loops from a Sonic Foundry Loop CD (Orchestra 3 I think). I didn't use Acid, though, just used Vegas to lay down and loop the various components. Plus I used volume envelopes to fade stuff in and out.

Re: my first project -- "still human"

cool! yeah, i find acid extremly limiting unless ya gonna fork out the xtra bucks for some pakages ::) I don't quite follow you on the whole cd thing? excuse my ignorance :P is it a seperate program? Thank you, and again, excellent job :D
