My first music video

I've just finished the shooting of my first music video. This is quite different from my usual work (documentaries, short movies) and I'm curious about the final result. But after all the shooting was more than fun. Postproduction will be the next challenge. Budget: lower than low.

HVX200E with stock lens
720/25PN (incl slow motion)
First time I really used my Kessler crane

I'm happy to hear your comments.

Frame grabs look good. I like the one on the lower right. Though a sample clip would be nice to comment further.

Is that women the singer? She kind of looks like Sheryl Crow.

She is the singer - I'm gonna tell her your remark. Unfortunately you'll have to wait for some sample clips.

Here you'll find a first (pre) version of my music video:

(H.264, half resolution, 148MB)

"Lullaby"
Artist: Andra Borlo
Album: New York Diary
Director & D.P.: JJ Breitenstein

Based on this slow ballad the clip is not very dynamic. My objective was to tell a story, to show some continuity and to have nice pictures adapted to the song. After all it's probably somewhat conventional.

Don't hesitate to criticize. There is certainly a lot of room for improvement.

good job. I'm not crazy about the shots above the bed looking straight down, mostly because it's not as becoming as the other shots of her. The red sheets feel a bit exagerated, but maybe that was the point. I think those shots in black and white may be stronger.

im gonna agree with djdecay. the way its shot, lit and edited dont speak at all to the mood of the song.
too many shots are WAY too long. and a couple of situations would have been much more moody with dissolves than just cuts.

the visual story would have benefitted greatly from a little depth of field. - which you wont get much of with a stock HVX. what you can do is back the camera away from the subject and just zoom in as hard as you can. it wont have the the magic of a prime lens, but it'll get you toward that direction.

as far as the lypsyncing looking robotic, id also agree. but you may or may not have had control of that. ive worked with a number of artists who simply CANT do it worth a crap! hard to imagne that they cant ape their OWN performance, but its often the case. is the woman the actual artist or is she just an actress?

there ARE some really good shots there, and you gotta love the kessler crane!
i just think that there is a huge disconnect between the song and the overall visual direction.

Hey guys
Thanks a lot for your comprehensive comments - very valuable hints&tips. I'm happy that you took so much time to comment.

Here a few answers on open questions:
- the woman is the actual artist
- very limited budget - not too much time for the shooting
- there is one shot with a shallow dof (crane shot: glass with reflection to singer). Unfortunately the focus was pulled fluently so that the effect is not quite visible anymore.
