my first music video -nikon d90

David, just mounted the camera on the flycam to move toward the drums and a few other shots that did not make it into the edit. i am still learning and have about 3 hours of practice with the flycam. i think it works best with a real wide angle lens, it was not that useful with the lensbaby. I also think the flycam is the most useful if you have autofocus. panny gh1? that should work great.

you need to find a new stylist and makeup artist. they look like dorks, and not in a cool indie way either. i also think there are too many closeups of guitar playing, and the editing in generally too slow and uninspired. sorry but you didn't convince me with this one. you know i love some of your other stuff though so keep trying.

Loved the video. I thought the simplicity worked great!

Nice ambient vibe that did not over power the music, but complemented it.

I wish the singer left the band and the chubby dude with glasses and moustache, the brazilian lookin dude became the singer..
otherwise it is a hard sell :)
the song is not too crazy either.
I think the video does best of out the presented combo.

can you elaborate on your lighting setup? How did you accomplish that sorta washed out look? Was this done post in editing?

Thanks

jon!

I can really appreciate some of the shot choices in this. Some really nice looking stuff.

Generally though I found it a little sterile. Ill explain. Very soft even lighting, white BG for the most part very clean looking band together just made it all look a tad clean. Everything was black or mostly white, with little shade in between. I can see that may have been your intention, but not sure I totally get it.

I also found the constant flickering focus a tad distracting - seemed a bit sloppy rather than for reason (not saying here either that it was sloppy or you didnt intend it exactly as it came out - just seemed) and there seemed a limited shot selection in the edit.

One other thing, I really liked the composition on the band when they where lined up on an angle. And it seemed like you started to pull focus through them, stopped and then there were a few cuts in that same sequence. Maybe a simpler approach would have been better? Not sure, just opinion here. But I would have ran them through the section and held focus on each guy, not rack it or kind of wander the focus. Would have made an easier and more interesting cut IMO.

All opinion mate. I mean how many average people will watch it and goo over this or that. So I wouldnt add too much weight to it, simply my thoughts.

Some great stuff on your site - really liked this - http://vimeo.com/3077605

hey Noel, thanks for taking the time and the detailed feedback. I agree, went overboard on the lensbaby effect, playing with the focus and sometimes it looks a bit too nervous. I had the same thought actually, on the angle composition, that is would be really nice to pull focus from one guy to the next, but the lensbaby has a sweetspot in the middle and towards the edges it will never look sharp. I hear you about the bleached out look too, the singer was worried about his skin and pulling it up was an easy solution. glad you liked my breathless homage - here in the us not enough people know about this movie.
