F55: my first impressions from a proper shoot...

HI all,

just wanted to share first impressions coming right back from a "real" shoot - a TV Commercial for a Hearing Aid Product.

We shot in 4k, edited in FCPX. Obviously the Plug-Ins/Extensions don't work yet (green Streaks as mentioned on other threads). a solution can't come too early. we ingested the material with standard import, and replaced the files that made the edit with clips exported from resolve ("convert format" feature right in the file browser window of resolve lite - sadly no batch convert)

image quality is astounding, i must say. i had to shoot one shot with iso4000 and really really little noise there....

ingesting with a sonnet adapter(pro version) blazingly fast with thunderbolt on a mac. i suggest if you're on a mac get this as it's faster than usb 3.0

we shot using the lcd viewfinder and a 7inch monitor on camera, 17inch for clients . for 4k i strongly suggest that you at least a 7inch screen to judge the footage on set/while shooting. 4k is übercritical for focus....
zoom in button on viewfinder would be nice if it even did a bigger magnification than it does now (1:1 mapping) (but maybe you can change that in the menue - i didn't find it)
i also hope that after any fimrware upgrade you don't have to have a original Sony Viewfinder. as i'm thinking of buying a f55 without a original viewfinder it would be bad if i updated firmware and had to get an original to make overlays visible on the sub outs again...

speaking of subs i couldn't get both to work - again probably my mistake or a firmware thing

one thing that we missed: as we shot and reviewed the clips i went with the client, director to the 17inch and watched footage from the cam. DIT played back clips, but there's no clip number displayed on the side panel.... would make it a lot easier to put down notes while playing back... you have to go back to thumbnails to check... (WiFi and ipad would be more elegant - but that's in the works i guess)

we had a dead pixel - will black balance get rid of them?

slowmo can't come soon enough - and speaking of, pleas don't limit the cam to the area it's in: what i mean is on the EX-1 in first firmwares it was fine to be in PAL and set the S&Q to 60fps which is a NTSC rate. later Versions of the firmware made you change the entire camera to NTSC... please don't do that with the f55... i knw how to handle 180fps even in PAL Lighting situations...

all in all a great experience (editing 4k on a WD Thunderbolt and an imac/laptop at the clients office) was amazing...

just have to find someone to get my F3 so i can afford a f55...

thumbs up!
