My first footage...

Ok its everyones chance to rail me now. This is the first footage i'm posting from my camera.

This is from my first job, making an instructional video for a karate school. The woman specifically asked to keep shots as static as possible, so the panning and zooming isn't anything impressive. I'm glad she let me do it at all, this black belt moved so much that in order to keep him in frame and not the size of a midget in picture, i 'had' to move it...

This has some basic color correction, nothing serious because obviously theres no real 'style' its going for, just documentary like.

Anyway here tis. bout 1.5 minutes, and 8.5 meg dl.

pshhh I could kick his ass... j/k

It was cool, good job. My only question is if you blocked out his movements before you started shooting him. I ask only cause it seems like you improvised your movements right on the spot.

we actually did 5 takes of this. by the end i kinda knew where he was going but didn't want to pull back or too far over too early.

this was the last take. if you have any tips or suggestions i'm more than willing to hear them. were the movements jerky or not good? Its definitely the kinda info i need.

The instructor really wanted extremely subtle movements which for me, i guess being a novice, made it difficult to move fast enough especially when he strafed to the left, where he came close to the edge of the frame.

Also, how is the color, lighting? I did actually do a little cc, with magic bullet, and added a bit of film grain and some other slight effects, contrast, etc.

good to know. do you have any suggestions for cutting down on the movement? just pulling back and shooting wide?

Could you have shot the same sequence from a few different angles? Then you coudl have had something to cut back and forth from. Some of his side kicks and thrusts woudl have been interesting to have been shot at the camera. Some medium angles woudl have been nice as well. of course it was a training video so it may have been neccessary to show the full range of motion. This is of course the problem with any client relation. They hire us because we know how to do it then they tell us how it should be done. I used to have a sign in the garage of my stores(truck accessories) Labor $60 an hour, $80 if you help. I liek how they didnt want you to move. Was there any rationale to that request? Maybe you coudl have snuck in a few interesting shots and cut a version with they extras to see how they reacted. Good work by the way. I know you were hampered by the clients. Would liek to see some other work where you are given some more creative freedom. Did you shoot no sounds or was it my media player?

In all honesty the guy reminds me of that fat kid that was doing the light sabre routine in that studio that flailed around and fell down. He seems awkward for a black belt. I've been spoiled watching videos of all the insane 'professionals'. The video is ok. You didn't have a whole lot to work with. Some added light may have been good.

I second the idea of shooting the sequence from different angles. Even if the woman didn't want it I still would have done it cause the one angle becomes boring.

cool ...silent instructional vid on cine gama D

reminded me of napoleon dynamite's dancin' skillz

maybe you should put that jamiroquai song on it.....

did he by any chance take that guy's 3 week course?

Hey guys. Yeah believe me I know its boring. I had to shoot the first 4 katas that way. Which sucked. It was only around brown belt that they were moving so much I HAD to pan just to keep them on screen. But this was an instructional video for her own school so I mean I gotta do what she asks :(

I'm glad she at least let me do 24p. I swear when she said I want the shots static and unmoving, i thought she was going to make me go 30i. But thankfully I at least could do 24p.

Based on what it is and what it was supposed to be, any comments? I know its not really interesting or cool, but I'm getting paid, and it means a bigger paying job 2 weeks from now so I'm not going to complain too much. Hopefully this will buy me a shot gun mic so I can make my own short film and then you guys can REALLY bash me :)

Try adding some music

Try adding some music

I logged onto some cinematic website right when your vid finished downloading then I started watching your video and the music from the site started at the same time. It was good. LOL then I realized the music was not coming from your vid. Try adding some music and then some visual effects to the footage on impressive karate moves. It will be much more impactful!
