My first ever moving image footage

Hi Guys,

Never one to do things by half, I recieved my first ever video camera a few weeks ago ( having never even held one before)

Yep you guessed it, I went for broke and bought the HVX and Two 4GB cards, "madness" I hear you cry.

Hah, I had the sense to buy Barry's book a few weeks previous, so have been pawing over it constantly.

Thanks Barry, it is worth it's weight in gold.

Anyhow lets cut to the chase, I invited a client of mine over who plays guitar, and I made my first video. If I have done things right there should be a download link at the bottom of this page, It's about a 45MB download.

It would be great to have a bit of criticism from anyone who cares to take a look, you can be as blunt as you like, I'm not precious and it is my first ever moving footage so be honest.

If you want the tech specs, it was shot on CineD with as much turned to manual as I could find. The performance shooting took as long as it takes to fill Two 4GB cards (under an hour total, alright alright I'm making excuses). The extra twiddly bits took the same amount of time again, but in my garden.

A few weeks previous I also bought final cut ( yeah I know, should have waited for FCP 2), but sieze the moment etc etc. So that's how I fumbled through the edit.

One confession, I am a stills photographer, so perhaps there should be a couple of frames in there that look OK.

Impressions: Wow, moving images are scary!!!
Camera, what a fab bit of Kit.

Hope you enjoy

Matt

That turned out great for your first time out! I really like most of the shots of the artist. The lighting for me was spot on, but then again that stills photography thing is the perfect background. I'd tighten up some of the edit and use some crossfades here and there. Wasnt a big fan of the garden footage really, but I think it was the handheldness that turned me off more than anything. And I'm not much for the effects either, but it looked better than most first time work. Congrats!

Oh and the guitarist - is he signed? Who is he? He's good!

Hi JdaJda,

Thanks for the kind words, heh.... first thing the artist said was , I like it but could you crossfade some of the shots! (great minds eh!)

Funny I kind of liked the "shakeycamness" of some of the outside stuff, however that might be me enjoying being liberated from the old stills camera.

Yeah effects Hmmmm!.. I have got to reign back being like a kid in the sweet shop of Final Cut Pro goodies, less is more and all that.

Just that the song is depression era USA, hard to get that accross in 21st Century Wiltshire (UK).

Thanks very much for the "Crit" I appreciate it.

Perhaps I should do a director's cut LOL

OOps,

Almost forgot, The artist is a very talented Guy named Geoff Fry. Who does music as a fun thing. He is an amazing copywriter and designer, and runner, and etc etc etc

He is one of those guys that just have it, lucky devil eh.

And a great guy to know, too many talents for his own good, that's his only down side.

We are planning to work on a version two, once we have touted this a bit and got some feedback.

Many thanks

Matt

Thanks Chaps,

I am always overwhelmed by the amount of knowledge and talent hanging out here, I can assure you everything is being noted down and taken into account.

Crikey,

I seem to have used up 1.5GB of data transfer in a matter of hours, curse you Dot Mac!

Looks like I am out of downloads until the 16th of this month.

Out of curiousity how do most of you Gurus out there get around this bandwidth problem. Any ideas anyone?

Matt
