My first DVX100A short "the messenger"

This short was shot in Mexico city in 5 hours on a Wednesday. Edited that same night and shipped to LA the next day for a contest. This was the very first time with a DVX camera, so I practically had no time to "learn" (cause the camera was borrowed and it had to be in the owner's hands by a certain time). We just winged it with all natural light and sound. I'd like to hear some comments about it, because I finally got my own DVX yesterday. I'm drowning myself in the instruction booklet and can't wait to start shooting. Anyway, check it out and tell me what you think.

LONG download time.

I liked the color scheme -- primaries. Had a '60s Truffaut sort of feel to it.

Seriously needed a tripod in most of the scenes; window was blown out.

But considering the time spent, a fair piece. Keep at it!

Given that you shot this in five hours with a camera that you were just learning, this was pretty good. Of course, I want to know what happens next. Do you have another 3 minute sequel?

Aha, that's what I like. I am actually writing the screenplay for this scene and I intend to shoot this for real.
Thanks for the comments David, magic and Rob.

Dude.. next time use a tripod.. the shaking was getting to me. and this was just in a small quicktime screen. I can't imagine how magnified it'd be on a TV

Like I said, I had to wing it. But yes, I also got a tripod with my DVX, so the next will not be as rocky.

Well that was a jip.  Right when I get into it it ends.  :(

I liked it.  I liked the hand held (cinema verite' - Everyone else throws this word around and so will I) shots.  I liked this piece overall.  5 hours?  Nice work.

I thought the INT shots were wonderful and the blowouts served you well.   The natural light is used perfectly. I'm using my imagination on this one:

The German ambassador is in Mexico and when the Mexican thugs steal the Device and bring it back to the independent party....

Big explosion!  :D

Great job!  I look forward to more work from you.

Since the camera stuff was mentioned.

I thought there was some editing problems. Inbetween some cuts there was this blip, and change of background.

some atmo under the dialogue would've been good.

the exposure in the car is alright. good overall considering the time

Thanks, you will see more. And you were almost right about the bomb. Now a crazy cab driver is loose in the biggest city of the world without knowing he is carrying the deadliest of fates. We only have 12 hours to find it.

Not too bad... thought you had a problem with crossing the axis of action a few times in the interior shots. While this can be broken often, it still needs to be followed to an extent.

I just felt jumped around a few times and had to keep reorienting myself to where the actors were looking...

I would have used a tripod and better sound equiptment. Also alot of your shots had too much headroom. Some had way too much. Some shots were pretty good though man. You should do some color correcting during post work cause it doesn't look as good as it should considering you have the DVX and all. Nice green bug car though. LOL.. But keep it up though!

This is true. Corssing the line can be used effectively (perhaps in moments of confusion or disorientation)
