My first demo reel

haha, true enough. i am very surprised and greatful, i have had horrible luck getting responses to my posts in the last few months, maybe thats because it hasnt been in the dvx section anymore, where the good fellows are...

good job on the reel. i liked the camera movement and all. were these short films? how many? i ask because you kept saying you dont have that much work yet this reel gives me the impression it's a lot of projects.

i'm on the fence about cutting it down shorter because i know they say a good reel should usually be about 3 mins max, however i've seen some good 4 or 5 minute reels on this site where the thread has gone on for 6 and 7 pages long and not one person comment on it being too long.

mostly all of them were short films, and although visually some of them might hold a little value, i assure you, its value ends there lol.

Via: Some of the footage is with an Ifocus35 HQ and some with the stock DVX lens, as well as some stock XH A1 footage.

i am currently going into my second year at the Mel Hoppenheim school of cinema, which is part of Concordia University at Montreal.

however none of these had anything to do with school, just on my own time, my own projects. etc.. and of course, helping my friends out.

PaPa - Nice work - Just finished watching it for the first time.

You seem to be taking the feedback rather well, so I'm going to give you my 2 cents here which is pretty much in line with what others have said:

1. some of your shots defnitely stand out as better than some others you have in there. I'm pretty sure you know which ones are your 'money' shots, and which are just 'good.'

2. The overall piece is a bit too long (i know, but it never hurts to hear it again).

3. The opening is too long for my taste.
It is 30 seconds into the video before I really get to see any of your footage. When it's a 3min piece, that's way too long of an opening, IMO.

My advice-

Make the shots consistent by keeping ONLY your absolute best work.
Cut out anything that doesn't jump off the screen - this will also help you make the piece shorter.

Either cut down the opening to 10-15seconds, or take others suggestions of starting out with some footage, and then bringing in your credit.

This is just a knee jerk reaction on my part - I watched it once, so take it with a grain of salt.

And by the way - as far as some reels being 5 min, and others being 2 min - i think it's all about how well it flows. Personally, I don't know if your reel is actually "too long" - but I do feel like the footage in it is inconsistent in levels of quality, and that may lead to the impression that it's too long because an audience will lose interest.

Once you show me your best - I, as an audience member, don't want to settle for anything less because I know you're capable of better. So only show us your best, and cut out anything else.

Then again - what do I know - i haven't had time to even cut my own reel.

Great work. Regarding the length - 3:00 is not bad for a DP reel. You might want to think about a music change though. I think that's why people feel it's longer than it actually is.

It's a nice cut of music but it just begins to sort of trudge along. Try mixing it up - maybe switch gears when you get into the "Miscellaneous" section. Hold on a beauty shot, 'bloom' out a music note and then punch in with a quick change. Just a suggestion but I do like your reel.

wow, great suggestions guys. I'm gunna find some time this week/weekend in this busy life and see what i can do based on all the input here. Thank you all again!
