I really like the closing shot, was that a crane shot?

Just curious. Did you have the song playing in the background and they simply lip synch/play mock instrument to it or did you record the performance on location? I'm wondering if having to synch to an existing track presents any difficulties in term of them having to play the instruments exactly the same everytime?

Yeah, they played to the track, haha, I wish I was that skilled at audio recording....what I acutally did is took the track, and layed a "click-track", (metronome) over the track, and then exported it as one audio file. So when shooting the video, there was a really loud, annoying beeping sound running thru the speakers.... but it allows the drummer to play full volume, and not make it look akward... the click track also does wonders when syncing the footage in edit...

as for difficulties playing exactly the same thing every time... it depends on the band... if the drummer usally doesnt play a set thing each time.. i can see how it could be hard.... but these guys were great... their drummer is really soild, and played everything exact to the recording....

Can anyone give me color corretion feedback, what should I do... I know I need to pull the exposure down a little in some parts... but I'm not too sure what to do for color...

thanks!

nomadic,

I think the shots look great. the lighting was awesome. yeah, maybe tweak the exposure a bit but you've got great footage to work with and that's the most important thing. And the song is recorded well.

Where did you shoot that? I live in Orange County as well. It looks like an abandoned school. Very cool.

Nomandic,
Just watched the music video. I really really liked it! Very simple song, very simple shoot. It's confirms what I always tell people about music videos. Find about three or four locations and shoot it four or five different ways and BOOM! Music video!

I know it's not true for any and all videos, but I think it's a pretty safe bet.

If I were to add a few things I would have gotten some closer shots of the lead singer and some close ups of the other musicians, grab some shots with good DOF.

What lighting setup did you use?

thanks for the feed back....

for the location... it was shot in detroit... not oc, haha but yeah, it was an abandon high school...and even though we had permisson to shoot at it.... it was scary as hell. and let me add hauling a full band's equip, PA system, lighting, camera and grip gear plus a generator up2 flights of stairs is not fun...

for the lighting setup... with our mega budget of $0.00, we had litte equp. opening shot... natural light...
full band shot, 2 500w and a 2k on a hihat...

does any one feel the skin tones are too orange... i think it is, but alot of people i speak with think its fine....
btw, does any one know any good tutorials for color correcting for fpc or AE...

thank you everyone, and keep the feed back coming!
matt

I felt skin tones were too orange too!

Not that I'm saying I didn't like your job! actually I think it's looking really good!
But I don't think the Tungsten lights were fully balanced to 5600K.

I dn't know about the contrast, it really looks good as it is. Maybe a small touch on the blacks would make the window flare stand out a bit more...

Anyway, good job!

A couple questions:

About the lighting, which i thought looks amazing..
-where did you place/set up the lights? (the 2 500w and the 2k)
-and what time of day did you shoot?
-how much of that light through the windows behind them was natural?

i'm shooting a friends band next weekend and only hope to find a location as sweet as the one you found.

Yeah, maybe a big orange-ish tones, but no big deal. your images are so great that it really doesn't matter. a little cc. your video looks better than most of the stuff i see on here and the song is amazing.

good work and thanks for any help on lighting answers..

that is my lovely painting of the lighting.... note the "rays" orange and blue... and that was the truth, becasue a zero dollar budget, there were zero gels, and unbalacned lights between the window and the juiced lights made a balancing nightmare but i ended up using a white card with a blue tint... and it worked good.

thanks for the feed back, when are you shootin the vid? maybe i can swing by if im bored.

later

it's definitely a little orange on the faces when they are lit up, but expected when using two diff. colour temperatures...

but it call all be fixed in CC!

Nomadic,

I think you did a decent job for your first video. I agree with taubkin about tweaking your blacks a bit to get the window in the back to stand out more.

Some nit-picks on your editing:
About 3/4's the way through the video, there is a far shot as the song is dropping out and no one is playing - then it appears the lead starts plucking his guitar before the actual guitar music plays - then it jumps to a close up of the lead playing and singing that matches really well with the music. You may want to cut that first far shot clip down before he ghost plays his guitar. Overall, it matched really well; however, that edit really stood out.
I also think there's some other places where you could tighten up around the cuts (some of the pans).

Just get some CC in there, some edit tweaks, and you would have a really nice showing for your first video.

congrats, that looks amazing
as for color, I saw there's some nice contrast on the shots w/ the guitar player on the wall and to the right of the bass player, the ones w/ the window in the back maybe u need to play w/ them a lil'.
other than that it rocks, I dig the 80's pale look
