My first craptacular "solo" documentary is set to release in June...

Just finalizing the work print right now and then to put all the secrets in the DVD menus and off to the distributors it goes this week.

"Crashing the Con", a look at the personalities exhibiting and attending San Diego Comic-Con 2008, from costumed attendees to artists to celebrities. I'll leave it at that until the full press materials are ready, but it is a bit 'deeper' as far as motive and purpose, while still remaining funny throughout. Told through a series of interviews and stories.

This is my first 'solo' project (though the Host during the project did assist with feedback during the editing process and acted as a PA when he wasn't hosting, so I got to give him credit as well) that I'm actually going to be putting out there for mass consumption (Read: DVD Release & Online Distribution). I've taken after my hero, Lloyd Kaufman, and exploited all of the PA-types and Host-types to work for nothing with promises of being associated with a feature that'd probably be seen by at least 5 people, including my mother.

It was completely self funded, which was liberating and annoying at the same time.

http://www.crashingthecon.com/ - I'll be updating the site with the full press materials once the final master goes to the distributor. And update this thread with an overview of how I worked through a lot of the red tape to get the individuals I wanted in it and the clearances I needed with an approximately two week lead time before shooting when the idea was developed, at least some of the parts which won't incriminate me.

If nothing else, definitely learned a lot. Namely, the more press passes you have in your possession, regardless of whom they are issued by (including yourself), the more access you get and the more likely A listers will begrudgingly talk with you on Camera and D listers will seek you out to talk to you on camera.

(This is by no means a high brow independent documentary, think of what it'd be like if Troma directly did a Documentary (not just distribute one))

Oh, and the closest thing to "Production Photos" that can be had from such a piece...

Me drinking in the early AM with some other videographers from the Convention. Excuse the vulgarity, I don't like being on that end of the camera.

I got to shoot some Triumph segments for Robert Smigel / NBC while we were at it all. Got him to spring for dinner after, even.

Cool! I've always wanted to go to a big comic con. I'll definitely consider buying this once you have it for sale.

Thanks! I might sell six copies now!

The final version to go to the distributor is actually rendering right now. Over the past month it was edited down from Six hours to Four hours to 1 Hour and 56 Minutes, then it was resequenced almost entirely with the help of a lot of feedback on it (all surprisingly good, though I suspect they're all lying to me because they didn't want me to go all Carrie on them). Fortunately I had a ton of great, hilarious content, unfortunately I had to cut so much of it, but I guess that's the bittersweet part about a project like this. At least, if for some crazy reason it sees enough sales to warrant it, I can release a real Director's Cut that'll be on multiple DVDs or Blu-Rays (Seeing geeks on costumes in HD is awesome!) that'll clock in at about 6 hours long and another hour or so of special features (interviews with staff of Comic-Con International about the show, the history of it, where it's going, some of their experiences through the years, which I left out of this version completely, along with coverage of private parties); then we'll see who's really man/woman enough to sit through that without their eyes bleeding.

It has really been a flexible project and has severely mutated since finishing shooting on it even.

And after a lot of annoyance, it's finally released and available on Amazon, a select number of retail outlets, and a few online distribution / rental facilitators. Lots of footwork to do it independently and retain all the rights, but well worth it.

It might be a steaming pile of crap. But it's MY steaming pile of crap.
