My first commercial .MOV now available

This is my first commercial gig :) There will be a few changes that will air (a voice over,  a font change, and the store logo at the end. The video and music are not changing).  I will not be able to post the completed version, but I can show this one.

I am interested in getting picked apart on this, because I want to make more and make a living at it.  And the only way to do that is to get some feedback.  You shall not offend me I already got paid :)  Although, the more constructive, the better; just saying it sucks will not help me get better :) If it does suck, please let me know :) but tell me how to fix it.
Example: "Hey, your commercial sucks! but maybe if you used the awb and/or removed the lens cap, it might not suck as much."  :)

I have had this cam since April 9th.  I have been honing my skills on a Sony high8 before that, so I am still learning the DVX.  I was able to get the cam because I landed this job. (contract for 4 commercials), and it pays so well, I want to do more.

SPECS:
1 super cool DVX100a camera
1 wobbly dolly (watch the guitars)
1 fluid-like tripod head
1 tripod
200 people who wander in the store who want to be on TV :)

Edited in Vegas only.

Should be able to see it on the TV in 2 weeks.

OK, for some reason some people have had problems getting my vids.  If you have problems, right click and download it first.

Re: My first commercial

It's not bad done, but you as to take a part, so where we go...
Add people, one of main role of marketing and advertisment it's to let people related them self to objects they seen.
Why when you seen beer comertial you don't seen drunk stinky fat guy laying on floor, but you see cool dude with couple hot cheeks. Unatentionaly you replacing visual character with your self. It is hard to establish relation if no people in sinery.
Add life to store, show "200" people there, message :" we so good , we always bizzy. we have plenty of help for you here.
we are your solution".Show helpfull salepeople with happy customer.

You make your decition on music, but to me it doesn't fill right, doesn't have flow shots with bit. In editing try to sinchronise cuts with bit. To the music tempo, i think shorter clips will be more fill in to.
Some shots was clever, but camera engale need to change, like in shot of drum sets, change to side shot with increasign depth field. Low angle shot on speakers wasn't bad, but need to be lttle bit closer, to increase filling of power.
Add shot of outside store logo, it will help potential costomers to recognize when they drive by.

Try to stay with one transition effect if possible, flash to white was look good, but fade to other since wasn't fill right.

All shots defently need to be shorter, you want impress them with ammount and quality of product, intrig, hook them bring to store and let sales man do the job. You don't sell product on this video, you sell good time for people who like play music.
Depend on what type of consumers store targeting, video can be adjasted.

P.S. this is personal openion, affiliate of this buliten board don't have any relation, or responsible for any grammar or other erros.

Aaahhh glam metal...I miss it so. I thought the commercial was pretty good. I thought some shots should be shorter, especially the static shots. Some of these seemed a little shakey, like the speaker shot. Did you use a tripod here? I liked the effect on the opening shot, tho I might have had it fade away to a clear picture as the title moved away. Kinda wanted to see the product. Still, it would get me in the store as is.

Couple of questions: Will this be airing on the local cable station? If so, who did you talk to about it at the station, and what kind of specs did they give you to work with, i.e. exact time, final format. etc.?

And the hairspray :)

I was laying on the floor. I wanted them to look tall.. the customers where all like hey, that dude with the camera is laying on the floor.

It will be airing in jax fl on the WB maybe others. I went to the WB and showed them the camera and the videos I took( the one with the cute kids) they said it was definatly good enough to broadcast(and the Engineers wanted my camera. I was like HEY back OFF :) ). They have a DV playback deck that they use to transfer it to beta tapes as there commercial machine is beta. I think many stations will take mpeg 2 the WB will in the future.. as for timing ....They do all the time encoding but the commercial needs to be 30 secs ( basically they said get it as close to 30 secs as you can) hope that helps..

thanks for the input.

Re: My first commercial

Things I learned making this commercial commercial

1)if they dont like your camera work (DoOver)
2)if they dont like your music(DoOver)
3)Its really hard to cram 20 mins worth of video into 30 secs :)
4)$$$=if you do it there way or if you can talk them into something else :)
5 it was fun.

Thanks for the comments! I had to run them through babelfish first though :)

Re: My first commercial

Re: My first commercial

pretty nice work!

I agree a little quicker paced editing would benefit this spot well, and maybe an exterior shot of the store front, if it looks good at all. A good VO will definitely help too.

I'd say this spot looks FAR better than the majority of spots I see on my local cable stations. At least you have a couple of DIFFERENT SHOTS, and THE CAMERA MOVES, and there isn't just some moron TALKING HEAD blabbing at the camera! How radically different! :o ;D Seriously, these concepts don't seem to exist in the local cable spots airing around here, and hopefully you got paid enough.

Re: My first commercial

I liked it! I thought you picked good shots. We have Sam Ash and Mars Music and Guitar Center in South Florida, and this looked like it could be one of their commercials...

All you need is that annoying "Guitars, basses, and amps HALF OFF" "Speakers, DJ equipment HALF OFF" screaming the entire time.  ;D

(he beat me to the joke!)

Re: My first commercial

Damn I liked it!

I just wanted to know how you got the knobs to move was that stop action or did you animate it with a prog like ulead.

I like to watch them wiggle! ;D
I rewinded several times and replayed the wiggling knobs. Sweet!

How did you do it man! I got to know!

Re: My first commercial

Re: My first commercial

I'm pretty sure they were automated faders, and the machine itself was running a flashy demo program of how they worked.

What do I get as a prize if I guessed the right answer?

Re: My first commercial .MOV now available

I liked the zoom into the mixer transition but agree you should have shot a wide shot of the store with people browsing somewhere in the spot.
