My First Capture

Greetings all,

I just picked up the dvx and decided to take it to my local park and try it out. My knowledge of video is pretty slim to none, but hopefully in time and with the help of you all and this forum i'll be able to progress in this wonderful field.

Well here it is, let me know what you think. Any comments will help. Thanks ;)

Re: My First Capture

Kong,

You have some nice shots. I see you experimenting with rack focusing which is good to paly with. Some of your fountain shots were nice. It looks like you were at the park all day. Looks like you're picking it up pretty good. I like the music too. Keep it up!!

Re: My First Capture

Wow, for first day, your camera sure shook ALOT LESS than mine did! lol. I had to edit out like 80% of my footage or else people would puke.

How did you setup the timer on the cam when the sun was going down? Did you have to sit there the whole time?

Re: My First Capture

It was like a "poor-mans disjecta." You're new here so that means very little to you. But trust me, any reference to disjecta is good.

You had a lot of REALLY nice shots in your video. Your focus, framing, and choice of subjects was interesting and never boring or repetitive. The editing was excellent too. You could have taken the easy way out and edited to the beats of the music, but you didn't. If you truly are a newbie then you've got real telent. Something tells me you've done this before. Maybe not with a DVX, but you're definitely experienced. The only criticism I have is that the plot and character development was pathetic. You're a horrible writer! Stick to videography and editing. ;D

I enjoyed your video very much and look forward to more posts from you.

Re: My First Capture

great job man. Me like! So you were using the time lapse settings? i haven't messed with that much. What setting were you using?

Re: My First Capture

nice use of soundtrack from K-PAX. i love that soundtrack.
but im tired of ducks and all.... sorry dis. not that i have anything against YOUR work.

great work!

I feel your pain on the shaky footage, i'm saving up for a tripod as we speak :) As for the sunset timer shot, i used the interval rec. setting. I belief is was set to record 5sec. every 1 minute. I gotta work on that one, i feel like it was way to jerky. I was hoping for a more fluid sequence, i'm sure a longer rec.time would do it. Thanks for your input.

P.K.:
I appreciate your comments on my shots. As for the "Your a horrible writer" comment; it's all good, that just shows that i have A LOT to learn. That comment right there is going to make me more conscious of the story and not just cool looking shots with no plot. But honestly, thanks for not holding back on your comment.

The only thing I shot before and edited was with my families home video cam. I just chopped up a little clip of my friends hanging out for the day. But before anything i made sure i had a decent understanding of the basic functions in FC. Thanks again for your comments, I can't wait to go back out there and give it another shot :)

DvPixl:
Haha, i totally agree with the cheezy ducky's. I have a feeling i'm going to look back at this post six months from now and laugh. This was totally for just getting out their with my new dvx and learning some of the functions and well, just have some fun. Thanks again.

Re: My First Capture

Hey DvPixl, you got a problem?

Kong, nice first effort. There's nothing cheesy about ducks. What makes a shot cheesy is the way you frame and present it. That goes for any subject matter.

You have a lot of potential and all you have to do now is keep working at it.

Re: My First Capture

Kong - I hope you didn't think I was serious about the "horrible writer" comment. It was sarcasm (in text form) ...with a smiley added for assurance. Your video was great. Although I felt your duck protagonist should have died at the end. Trust me, there wouldn't have been a dry eye in the house. :'(

;D

Re: My First Capture

disjecta:
Lol, I love it. That image just made my day. ;D

P.K.:
Haha, the funny thing is I did take it literally. Believe me, I'm laughing now :) Thanks for clarifying.

Re: My First Capture

Kong - I just watched your video again (3rd time). It really is good. You should be proud. I hope you're inspired to do more. Don't put the camera in the closet and forget about it. So what's next for you?

Re: My First Capture

Marvelous!

Thanks for the link to your enjoyable "First Capture".
I too, think you are a natural, and may take off like a rocket. ;-)

Although a beginner with digital, and like you,
minimal motion experience, I applaude your moxie to provide us
the link to view your work!

I joined the forum (Cafe) 2 nights ago, was warmly received,
and generously assisted.

Having read all the responses here, I am convinced that we
"Trainees" are most fortunate to have ventured into this niche
of the cyber world.

Best wishes, :o

Re: My First Capture

Kong-

Looks good for a newbie. You are definately getting the framing skills. I especially liked the night shot of the fountain with leaf in the foreground.

Now you gotta invest in the three items which up your production value: tripod, crane, and dolly.

Looking forward to more.

Disjecta- funny pic. My first thought was 'automatic duck'.

I couldn't agree more, this online community is perfect for us to learn and grow together. I truly appreciate your comments and look forward to building with you and others in the near future.

speedbump:
Yes, you hit the nail on the head. I'm learning that a tripod is vital to capturing cleaner and steadier shots. I found it near impossible to get a smooth and leveled pan. Now only if i had the money, but in time i'll add to my collection. Thanks for your comments :)

Re: My First Capture

Hey Kong,

You've heard "it" a number of times so far... I do like your work as well. :)

I think you have a good photographic eye for composition. I like the colors of your pictures.. my favorite was the one of the Kid standing in front of the water at 00:01:42 'ish time.

I look forward to see more of your work in progress. ;)

Re: My First Capture

good stuff, I like the people walking in the foreground when your focused on the background. and your night stuff looked good too... you play with the settings much?

Re: My First Capture

RJ:
I appreciate your comments a lot, thanks.

lincolnlog:
Much appreciated comments. As I remember, i brought the detail down to -4, -3 chroma level and took the master ped to -2 for crushing the blacks slightly. It's amazing to see all the settings available at your fingertips. Thanks again ;)

Re: My First Capture

nice work kong. love the compositions of those shots.

has anyone ever gotten the interval rec to deliver nice results? i have never been happy with any footage i've seen.

i just let my camera roll and eat up tape and time, and speed it up in post. i'm sure most people just shrieked when they read that.

Re: My First Capture

I just felt like I spent all day at the park with you :) Some nice shots, I like your choice of low angles on some of your shots. I think my favorite was the glow of the sun behind the tree. It sure is fun to play w/ the DVX for the day!!!
