MY FIRESTORE Experience

Nope it definetly isn't 9 hours. I haven't run the battery down all the way, but I would guess that the 90 minute claim is about right.

Morisato...

Notice I didn't disagree with anything you said in my last post. I also agreed that the Cineporter might be a better solution. I just added some facts to help support the debate on both ends. It wasn't an attack on you, or what you are saying. You just left out a few points that I thought we all could benefit from. No need to get all defensive. We're pretty relaxed around here :)

hahah... I like to argue. I have an odd perception of things and so I argue a lot, and find pleasure in twisting the perception of others. Usually, they think im psycho in the end though. I dont see why anyone would get all butt hurt about an arguement like this. Obviously there is a reason for each or else one would phase out quickly. And if millions of people think differently from me and purchase an inferior (in my mind) product, then it's all the more better for me when I compare the value of my money with the value of theirs.

I just ran the battery down in one long record test. 83 minutes until it wouldn't boot back up. I have the extended battery, a charger and the new camera mount being shipped to me Monday. It took some begging but the guy at Focus was super nice and came through for me. The battery may last a bit longer if the recording isn't one long grueling one like I just did for a test. I have a mix of semi-portable power source batteries and inverters, belt and camera mounted batteries and portable and RV generators so I hope to only need the on board batteries for gurellia style shooting. I will report on the extended battery when I get that baby in hand.

The way I see it is.... you have 100 minutes of space to record to and a 90 minute battery...... so you have a battery that runs out 10 minutes before the total GB count..... Could you not use two Firestores and use one up for 90 minutes, recharge it for 10 minutes, just enough to pull stuff off, then finish recharging it and while your doing that record to the other? Well thats if you need a huge amount of space too, it's almost like hotswapping P2 Cards. You could just use two..... I mean its the price of one 8GB Card.

Preface- I have not used the FS-100-

My expierence with the FS-4 and focus enhansements has not been a good one. Don't get me wrong, once I got everything working smoothly with my DVX, I have LOVED it. But until I worked all the bugs out, it was a headach. And the price of the specialized batteries was too much IMO. (If you want a cheap alternative, check this out: http://www.batteryspace.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=1261 this works for the FS-4, and if the FS-100 has the same inputs, it should work for the FS-100 and give you about 4.5hrs of recording time.)

Anyway, back to focus- their tech support SUCKS. I could not get a straight answer from anyone, and even on their "own" tech support board which is supposed to be manned by a rep, no one replied. So I had to do my own testing, and resolve the problem on my own. Now that it is all working it is great and I love being tapeless- I'm not going back to tape! As I make the transition now to the HVX, my expierence with focus has lead me to not buy the FS-100, just do to the issues I had with the FS-4. And it sounds like others are expierencing the same issues with the FS-100. I need something that will work reliabily, and be able to talk with people who know there product. So, it's all about the P2 cards for me. (Until the cineporter comes out that is ...)

Ryan,

Give us some FS-4 hints as to camera control of the Firestore. BTW, I have not been impressed with Focus' tech support either. The vendor I purchased from saved me, Focus took two and a half days to respond. I'm menu hunting for the right combination.

I put together a results page of my testing with the FS-4 on my site at: http://www.235studios.com/tutorials/235FS4Test.pdf

But that focused more on getting the correct recording rate (24pa). As for recording, I have noticed that the FS-4 can be pciky at times with the DVX. AS long as you have it set to external control, you should be fine. I have not expierenced any problems with the record control when the camera is set to external.

I hope that helps.

I agree with Barry! FS is here today and the CP is Vaporware at this point... While, anyone can claim features & benefits that covers all our wants & needs, bringing it to market in a timely manner or at all is the major hurdle. Focus is a reputable multi-generational manufacturer which delivers.

Cheers to all HVXers!!! I am in love with mine!!! Will shoot the Bloody Wall in Little Cayman for a kids show next month... will post.

Randy,

I use a Bescor battery belt. It powers my 7" on camera monitor, the Firestore and the transcoder. If I'm smart, I can run for a good part of the day turning on and off and alternating between the Firestore battery and the belt. It gets a bit heavy after a while but I'm not a camera guy either so I'm not in DP shape. I like to know the equipment and do shoot quite a bit when I don't need to hire someone.
