Hi,
i tried to do some low light pictures with my 60d at high iso but i couldnt have proper picture without a flash.

The canon s110 of my father was able to use higher iso and could snap a good picture with more brightness.

Can someone explain this ? is there something im missing here ?
thanks in advance,

The s110 has a f.2 lens on it. What lens did you have on the 60d? Probably some generic f.4 kit lens?

Also, what shutter speed were you using? The 60d will make the night look like day if you leave it open long enough. ISO is what you use last...

The 60D has a max 12800 ISO. If you can't get take a better photo with a common f1.8 lens than a point-and-shoot, then I'd chalk it up to user error.

You only have 3 variables here: Aperture, Shutter Speed & ISO.

If you have a static image, then just lock the camera on a tripod and play with longer shutter speeds (and you can keep the ISO low) - you will get excellently lit photos with little noise. For any kind of movement you will need to think about using more light (flash or otherwise), open the aperture, and increase the ISO.

Isn't there some preset on the 60d for doing Night Portraits (its not on the 5D I use, but its an image of a man standing in front of a star on the dial)? That works pretty well for a lot of situations; the flash freezes the foreground, and then a longer shutter speed captures the background.
