My EX1 looks like crap in 24p

Yes, you edit in 24p native and you export MPEG2 in 24p native. However, that MPEG2 file won't be accepted by any DVD authoring system as-is because DVD spec doesn't support 24p, so it is necessary to change the frame flags within the MPEG2 file to "fake" the 60i format that DVD requires. It's still a 24p file, but it's reporting that it's 60i so that the DVD authoring system will accept it.
I use a free utility called DGPulldown to accomplish this.

Is there an easy way to determine if the video (when playing in a set top DVD player) is progressive or interlaced?

Yes, during a sequence where there is considerable motion, especially horizontal motion, like a passing car, pause the DVD. If the picture either flickers, or, alternately, if it loses vertical resolution (jaggies appear on near-horizontal edges) it is interlaced. If no change in picture quality occurs and it looks photographic and non-flickering, it is progressive.

Could somebody explain this method for authoring a dvd in DVD studio pro (file created in compressor)from a 24p timeline originally in FCP? I assumed that compressor was outputting a progeessive image when i created an mpeg file that i take over into DVD studio, or is there something special i should be doing
