EVA1: My EVA1 FILM...

I had the privilege of being the first film maker anywhere in the world to work with EVA1.

There has been a lot of talk about the camera since the launch at Cinegear earlier this year and that often leads to disappointment when the camera doesn’t perform as well as you expect it to.

The camera I used in this video was the first prototype but, to be honest, EVA1 performed above and beyond my expectations, and in my view it’s every bit as exciting as the film making community thinks it is.

Here it is: https://vimeo.com/231577650

Filippo, good job. The image sure seems nice, the skin tones are on spot, almost Alexa-like.

Can you share a bit more about the process? What settings did you record this on? Lens kit? And what drone did you mount the camera on? Sorry for the torrent of questions, but I'm really interested.

Nice subtle grade, by the way. And the motion seems so good, what did you think of the rolling shutter effect?

hey filippo, would love to hear your experience on a few things...

first- for low light shooting and iso 2500, did you find the noise to be organic? and is there any settings in the picture profile or Vlog to set or adjust the noise reduction?

second- did you manage to shoot any slow mo footage? like 120p or 240p? is it soft? or do you think it looks fine and sharp?

third- the EIS function on the EVA1, did you use it and do you think it helped stabilize your handheld shots?

lastly how do you find the highlight handling of the EVA1 compare to your Varicam LT? Do blown out highlights clip very harsh like video?

Beautiful work! Lovely grading! The sensitivity of the camera movement vibes with the powerful musical accompaniment. I shared with my film students and it truly inspired them (it is the perfect example for their minute visual landscape film project). Well done!!!

I agree! It actually exceeds my expectation and I am very pleased and interested in this camera.

Thanks Miguel.
I used Prime Circle, Zeiss and Canon lenses.
I recorded in V-Log.
For editing and grading, I used 25p 10bit on-board images and 50p 10bit shots from Atomos external recorder.
Please, take a look to the BTS: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZxvDTOrGQkM&t=74s

Hi,
I filmed on the very first EVA1 prototype (an early sample) with the first firmware available, so I can't judge the real noise of the camera. The image quality of the EVA1s I saw and tried the last two days at IBC in Amsterdam, is much more improved.
I did not use EIS and super slow-mo was not available (as I said, it was the first prototype).
There are two NR steps in camera, but I don't like to use NR during shooting.
The EVA1 it's a real mini VariCam, also in the highlights.
