My DVX100BE is not recognized by my computer

Hi. I recently blew some dust off my DVX camera and did some footage, when I tried to get the footage to my computer, my computer isn't recognizing the camera :( I've tried two different cables and the computer is recognizing the firewire card. I do have a faint memory of having this problem before and solved it by borrowing a friends camera to transfer the footage. I was wondering if theres anything I could do? What will make the firewire port on a camera that works just fine stop working like that? Is there like a small miniDV thingy I can buy to and connect to my computer, or do I have to buy some cheap miniDV camera?

You may have to buy a cheap MiniDV camera, because it sounds like the Firewire port on you DVX might be fried. It's not the first time this has happened.

Yes, plugging in the firewire with either of the devices powered on is taking a risk. I took mine out by having the camera powered on when I plugged in the firewire cable. Had to send it off to get it repaired, fortunately under warranty. Since then I have always made sure the power was off on both the computer and the camera when plugging in the cable.
