I used mine for two weeks before a filter even touched it. call me crazy but that's just the way it went down.

coffee, I ran out and made a short film "The Climbing of Mt. Kilburn" to test the camera when I first got mine (it's a hidden extra on the HC dvd) on an ice mountain and pieces of dirty ice fell onto the lens in a shot. I got it on tape and it makes a funny outtake but I was sweating like crazy till I got it cleaned! Lens hasn't been naked since. I'm such an idiot.

I can realte. I was filming my kids in their pool and my daughter ran upto me and shook some water onto me and the camera somehow. I looked at the lens and sure enough, water splatter! DOH! I was sweating bullets but it was only water! lol

The multi-coating reduces UV rays, as well as reducing flares and internal lens element reflections.

Jarred once posted a pic that really did a good job of showing how a non multi-coated UV filter can cause problems.

Coffee, water can kill a lens. I got a few drops on mine too and it turned out to be okay, but it's still a very bad idea.

Yeah, I heard something like that a while back but wasn't sure if it was true.

Ok, this sucks! How do I know if the one I bought is coated or not?

I don't mean to alarm you about the whole 'multi-coating' thing. However, it is something worth knowing about. Also, UV rays can obscure distant details in outdoor shots. UV filters allow for some correction of that.

I have a few Tiffen UV filters (no MC) that I will use indoors where I might decide to protect the more expensive multi-coated UV filter. Hey, it still gives your lens some protection. Just be aware of potential flares, etc.

Did you purchase from EVS or B&H? If so, their websites might give that info - look for the letters "MC" in the description or name.

Here's an example of a quality UV filter for the DVX with multi-coating.
