my dvx is all grown up! - check out pics

Thanks for all the repsonses everyone. I'll try to answer some of your questions. Also, the film is being cut right now (I'm not the editor) but I should have some footage to post soon.

What made us go with the DVX? I already had it and love it. Also, this was a REALLY low budget film so we couldn't really afford anything better.

As for the gear, most of you are right. Except, Barry. We got all our rental gear from DJ Woods instead of Image Gear. (The producer's had a hook up @ DJwoods otherwise I would have gone with IG). Everything is mine except the lenses, matte box and followfocus.

DVX100A
Petroff MatteBox
Chroziel followfocus
Century Optics .6 wide angle (and also Pana .8) - they gave us both
Century Optics 1.6x tele lens
Manfrotto 501 head and shitty legs tripod

For the filter package, we got a bunch of stuff, ND grads, Pro Mist, Ultracon, Polarizer etc. (the outdoor pictures were taken all at the same time while we were setting up, so I didn't have the polarizer filter in yet, we did use it alot outside along with the ND grads).

Lighting:

We used my lowel lighting package which consists of:

(Copied and pasted from my gear list)

1x Lowel Rifa Lite 500w Collapsible Soft Box + Removable front panel diffusion – Contained in cloth bag
1x Lowel Tota Light 750w + 2x Clip on Barn Doors
1x Lowel 500w Omni Light + Barndoors
1x Lowel 250w Pro Light + Barndoors
2x Lowel 1000w DP Lights + Barndoors
1x Video Pro Chimera for 1k DP light
3x Standard Light stands
3x Heavy Duty Light stand
6x Power Cords
2x Extra Bulb Packs (Lampacks)
1x Difusion Umbrella
1x Tota Clamp
1x Tota Flag
1x Flex Arm

Dvrack was running on a Toshiba laptop borred . (We used the trial version. hehe.. couldn't afford to pay for the real thing, but it worked fine and we had a week left on the 30day timer at the end of the shoot.

I can't recomend DVrack enough. I will NEVER shoot without it again. Only problems we had were the noise from the laptop fan would sometimes be audible so we had to shut it off during a couple of scenes in quiet rooms. And we weren't able to use it outside much due to the weather and the pain in the ass factor.

Our audio setup was a Sennhizer 416 mic running into a Shure mixer and then into both the DVX and MiniDisc for backup. Also had a couple of Sony wireless lav's for a few days for certain scenes.

Anymore q's be sure to post. I'll post footage once i get it.
Thanks

Thanks for the clarification. I didn't realize DJ Woods had the petroff in their rental cycle. Good to know!

Very nice, I can't wait to see some footage. It sounds like you have a nice light kit. Did you piece it together over time? Or buy the bulk of it as one kit? That's something I need to work on is getting a lighting kit together. How cold was it when you were shooting? Did you ever have any problems with the cold affecting the camera?

Looking forward to the footage. I am running similar kit. Hope to get some shooting with the trial DV Rack within 30days, thanks for the heads up on noise.
J.P.

I bought most of the lighting gear in a lowel kit. The DV Creator 55 or something like that a while ago. (GREAT KIT BTW). (the two 1k DP lights, i got those on ebay), but yeah I've been piecing my gear together bit by bit when I can afford to buy something new.

It was VERY FREAKING cold on a few days that we were shooting. ( -20 on one day) We didn't have any problems with cold affecting the equipment other than slightly decreased battery life. (The crew and the talent were another story)...

jpbankesmercer - I'm using a new laptop now that isn't as loud as the one I used on this shoot and so far I haven't had any problems with the fan noise, so it depends on the model I guess, some are louder than others. Enjoy the DVrack!

Petroff Mattebox

Petroff Mattebox

The Petroff is a well made versatile mattebox. I like that I can have as little or as many (before vignetting) filter stages as I need and that's it's fully configurable. There have been a few times where I've been in super tight situations but still needed to use my filters. The mattebox allows you to remove the shade part of it and keep the just the filter stages mounted. The build quality is overall pretty good..most of it is a hard plastic except for the sidewings and french flag. I normally rent the 4x5 version with 3 stages.

Blazing Goat,
I have been trying to figure out which Light-Weight Support you have on your DVX in the pictures on you website. I have recently purchased the Image 2000 LWS (Birns + Sawyer) for the DVX, and I am not entirely happy. The LWS that Chrosziel makes specifically for the DVX (ie. #401-46), is not the one you are using. Yours is bigger, and allows you to retract / pull back the 15mm rails. If you happen to know the brand / model LWS (looks like a Chrosziel?) you are / were using, I would appreciate your repsonse.

thanks in advance

P.S. For comparison, the photos that bchweong posted earlier of his DVX / Petroff setup, show the smaller Chrosziel LWS. You can see a noticeable size difference between the two.

intro2trig:

I wish i knew which LWS we had. It came with our rental package (I didn't request it specifically or anything). It didn't have ANY markings or logos on it at all. I even asked the rental guys and they didn't know what kind it was. I think it's A LOT better than that chrosziel Barry (bchweong) posted pics of. (I've used that one before) and it doesn't seem to be as sturdy as this one we had on this shoot.

It's definatly not the chrosziel... does petroff make LWS? anyone else?

Sorry I couldn't be of more help. If you find out what it is please post it here, cause I'd love to know.

I'm not SUPER crazy about the petroff.. It works well but I find it a little flimsy compared to the others I've used.

Thanks for responding... After having looked around, I did find that the lightweight support in question was a Petroff... (see link below)

http://www.petroff.ws/SupportingSystems.jpg

My biggest complaint with the Image 2000 lightweight support, is the fact that the rails / rods are not adjustable / removable. And the thing is huge. (which has an advantage when connecting to big / flat bottom of the DVX, good for big focus pulls) I really like the fact that you can adjust / reverse / remove the rods on the Petroff. Some of the photos on your website show the rods pulled back, out of the way, with no mattebox or follow focus... Similar to some of the bigger 19mm units from Chrosziel. The smaller Chrosziel units "flex" somewhat when you start cranking on them. I first had the Chrosziel, exchanged it for Image 2000 (thanks to Jim @ Birns & Sawyer). I am still no 100% happy... What other lightweight support(s) do you prefer?

thanks,

The petroff LWS is pretty sturdy...I've also used it a few times. The LWS also comes with an optional sliding plate that allows you to move the entire baseplate forward or back...it doesn't look like it's on there with Morgan's pics. It's definitely a lot more solid and beefier than the Chrosziel for less $$$.

Does anyone know of any other 3-stage matteboxes? What does Chrosziel sell there's for? I do like the petroff a lot but the Chrosziel craftmanship is better, especially its sidewings and french flag (albeit you pay for it).

This new 5x5 box from Cavision looks interesting:

I wonder how much?

bcheong,
Thanks for your input, I will be renting one of the Petroff units and a Cinetech follow focus from Moviola (LA) in the next day or so. Judging by the pictures I've seen, I think I will prefer the Petroff. I really like the idea of being able to retract the 15mm rods. To my suprise, I was not happy with the Chrosziel LWS... Lots of flex. I am thirllled with my matte box / wings / flags / follow focus from Chrosziel . I will keep this post up-to-date with some info. Hopefully, by then, I will be "allowed" to post photos... If anyone is interested?

thanks,

Always looking for some good pics. I do love the Chrosziel. It's built really well. If only it had 3 stages.
