My DVX-100a Video for Thievery Corporation

Here's my video that I shot on a DVX-100a that I borrowed from some friends. (Thanks Brendan Canty & Tangerine Studios!) I did the animation in After Effects, and the editing was done with my buddy, Bill McKenna, using Avid XPress Pro. The name of the track is "Warning Shots."

http://homepage.mac.com/mividaloca/FileSharing1.html

It will be showing on MTV2 this Sunday (the 24th) on "Subterranean." Starts at Midnight and it'll be the 6th vid in.

These DVX User forums have been my favorite little place to hang while I've been editing and animating (and dreaming about buying my own DVX-100a!) so I'm interested in what you guys think about it.

I'm also in the band. I play sitar and guitar with them live and in the studio. We're about to head out on three months of touring around the world. May through July. If any of you DVX User peeps would like to come to a show, drop me a line and I'll post the tour dates. (So long as it's not a festival, NYC, LA, Boston or DC, I shouldn't have any problems getting you and a friend in to the show - if it is one of those cities, well, there's always paid reserve!)

Hope you dig the vid. Thanks again.

p.s. Sorry that the video isn't in its own viewer/page, and needs to be downloaded! It's also viewable on Yahoo:

Loved the familiar sound of Thievery Corporation. Liked the animated wave form things at the top and bottom of the screen. What did you animate them in?

Damn i started listening to you guys about 6 years ago or so been a fan ever since...your music has influanced a couple shorts that i have done scenic things mostly...i enjoyed the vid except for that one dude with teh rasta flare, seemed a lil out of sink at times...but overall thought it looked good....

excellent work man, im down for a show but i live in the MD DC VA area....let me know i could come down and shoot a set or something, have a good time and what not....

keep up the good work....
sent you a pm as well

Hey man that was awesome great skills with AE I envy you. Havn't even got the program yet but I envy you:) The music was sweeet! The opening animation reminded me of a opening animation to a motion picture! I am going to PM you. Good stuff!

all the animation was in after effects. i've had problems animating over footage and then bringing it back into the editing program only to have it look more "lo-fi" than the source footage. so i decided to have just pure animation moments and then animate in the blank spaces during the split screen moments. ie: very few crossover moments between animation and footage.

Here's our tour schedule:

Hopefully I'll have my DVX-100a by the time I leave. I want to do a little fictional short featuring one of our percussion players who's done some bit parts - he played the "happy bartender" in that most indie of indies, "Slacker."

Well, they played it last night on MTV2. The pleasure of checking off the "Have video played on MTV" box from the Life List was temepered with the annoyance that the taped had been dubbed down so it was a little fuzzy and over-crushed in the blacks... Ah well. Must go and find out what I could have done to prevent this in the future. Will the lessons never cease?

im sure if you would have ran it through a waveform moitor and vectrascope ure levels would of been fine.....im pretty sure avid has em built in i know afx does...that will put all ure color and britness at legal levels for broadcast...

everything was scoped and legal (we did a lot of the editing here in DC at the offices for the BBC where my editor works). but i'm sending another piece off to mtv tomorrow, and i realized that they want "Beta SP’s or Digi Beta tapes" only. the label didn't mention this to me for the last piece, that might have something to do with it... i sent a miniDV...

watched it on mtv2 sun nite. Great video man for a great band. Im getting after effects now. Ill be at the show in philly 4sure!

Whoa... I just had The Richest Man in Babylon album playing on my iPod on my ride home tonight. Always enjoy your music. Will look forward to seeing you in San Francisco.

The video is great. Some cool AE work in there. Not sure about some of the vignetting in several of the shots. Was that something intentional? Otherwise, well done and it deserves play time.

look forward to seeing you in SF! (not that the warfield isn't a nice venue, but i'm psyched to play the fillmore for the genuine vibe that still pervades the halls there!)

the vignetting was totally intentional. insofar as the wide angle lens (like the camera) was borrowed and that's what it did when it was pulled wide. since my last video was all after effects animation, i was trying to do a "down and dirty" video that wasn't going to take to much time (ha!). i was worried about the vignetting at first but as soon as i got over it i came to really like it. it let's the viewer know that a camera was there. a 1970's 8mm feel. i also used it graphically at times to tie in the AE animations around it and make the image even "rounder" looking.

that being said, i've just bought a dvx-100a and am ordering a wide angle lens. it's the .7x century optics, which should have little to no vignetting. i wonder if i'm going to miss the effect...

if you're listening to "richest man" pay special attention to "all that we perceive" it's one of my favorite pam bricker tracks (she also sings on "lebanese blonde" with me on sitar.) pam took her own life on feb 20th. it's to sad to talk about in a forum like this, but it's going to be hard playing live without her. i memorialized the date in the video in one of the money animations. it happened right when i started editing the video.

damn thats too bad, may she rest in peace.....

but on a nother note the .7x is a nice lense...vignetting in post is always better imho, if u dont like it u can get rid of it....better then being stuck with it....

Just checked out the video!

kudos! it rocks. How long have you been working with AE? You really did a great job with the effects and transitions.

I thought it got a little slow during a couple of places..but overall, enjoyed watching AND listening!

Too bad you're not coming to Dallas, would have loved to see you guys, and bring along my DVX!

yeah, i look forward to a vignette-free wide angle lens. however, it's nice when you're stuck with a "flawed" image it makes you think of ways to work with it. it's like when i shoot in black and white with my digital camera. sure you can turn any color image into b/w, but it's nice when the image says "this is all i got. how do ya like me now?" lord knows the options we've all got at our disposal in post! i'm always looking for more, but the possibilities have gone way beyond "limitless." i think they were merely at limitless around 2002...

hopefully we'll get to the south in the fall. i'll keep you posted!

as for AE i've been using it off and on since 1997. it's an outcropping of my love for pshop. i don't get to use it as much as i like. i've got too many disperate projects going on, so every time i get back into it, it feels like i'm hitting the slopes for the first time again... if you like, check out the last music vid i did for my other band, Thunderball. it's all in AE:
