My DIY Redrock micro Captain Stubling

I have made a kind of Captain Stubling (Redrock Micro) with aluminum and steel 15 mm rods. The FF is a Proaim (Cinecity, India). The most difficult part is to make the 15 mm holes separated at an exact distance = 60 mm. If you fail a bit the parts will grip and stuck. I have used bicycle handlebar grips (5 euro a pair at Decathlon).

Really inexpensive.

6 meter stainless steel 15 mm rod = 24 € (only used < 1 meter)

With 7 € I bought aluminum stock enough to make two rigs.

Aluminum 20x20 mm square bar (2 pieces of 57 mm)
Aluminum 60x10 mm I used aprox 90 mm (Top plate with a rubber on top, camera base)

Aluminum 30x10 mm (2 pieces screwed to the top plate 2x 90mm)

Bike handlebar grips = 5 € a pair.

The handlebars of the rig are made of polipropylen round stock bar (25 mm diam). The extremes are cut to square and bored (15 mm). Price around 2 € a 1 meter bar. You can use other plastic like nylon or even aluminum or other thing you can achieve.

Screws Allen metric 4x20 mm

THE BIG PROBLEM is the many work hours you will need. You have to tap several threads and drill the 15 mm holes with great precission. After that you perhaps will have to file the holes in order to slide the bars into.

If you dont want to tap the holes you could use screws and nuts, but in that case you will need to drill from side to side the pieces and is complex with the 30x90x10 pieces to drill a 90 mm hole.

Barrel nuts are the key to avoid tapping holes, you get a replacable steel thread into an aluminium part strong, replaceable and they wont spin when tightened up with a Kipp lever

Further observation of this part you will note that I can bolt stuff on the bottom side or top using the end barrel nuts holes (end nuts not in place in this image)

Addtionally if you use aluminium, tube it has a little give to reduce the tolerances requirement of your boring

This looks awesome and is exactly what I'm looking for.

Can you take some close up pics?

Also what focus puller is that?

Here are some pics of the rest of the rig (shoulder support). The FF is a Proaim (Cinecity).

hey man, looks great what you did. I build something like that but its all wrong because of the hole separation.

Whats the distance between the two holes? i mean imagine this as the holes 0-----0, so is 6mm like this, from the begining of the left hole to the end of the second hole ? or 0--6mm--0? hope you can help me

thanks
