OK I'm going to stick my neck out and say it (i know it may be already to late).....

Panasonic if you are reading this, please, please change the styling of the HVX200 because right now it looks very ugly (sorry but thats the truth in my eyes)

There i said it. Glad i got that off my chest.

What do you guys think about the styling?

Shoot for a while with a Bolex Rex-4 with an MST motor and a reflex zoom bolted on it, then come back and beg for a prettier camera.

Are you gonna try and pick up chicks with your camera?

I was a little disappointed with the styling, I thought the viewfinder looked a little like a stovepipe. But now that I've looked at a while its starting to grow on me. Besides, I wasnt crazy about the new body style of the Corvette when it first changed but now it looks great to me. We all must learn to embrace change. I also like that its a little beefier than the DVX.

Feels good doesn't it? It's good not to keep things like that to yourself, if you ask me. I'm a little disapointed with the aesthetics of the camera. It hardly looks as "professional" as other cameras in its' price range, like the Sony Z1 for example. The Sony looks like a more expesive camera and I don't feel that just because the AG-HVX200 provides superior images means it should have the appearance of a consumer Handycam, or something even less robust looking than a consumer Handycam. Fortunately what it lacks in the looks department can be supplemented with my matte box, support, and follow focus and it will be a serious package when fixed up. Of course the quality of images it will produce will be superior than other cameras in the price range, still we're talking about a $6K-$10K investment, and I'll just say it: it looks like something from Fisher Price. Oh well. There, I said it. But, the camera still kicks and will produce the best images and along with some other toys, it can look cool like the other cameras it's in competition with.

In looks, no camera can beat the JVC. There I said it. It feels good.

But, I have to admit, the form factor of the DVX is way more practical...

I second that motion too Lock and Delete... before this well traversed topic degenerates into a big steaming pile of ****.

You are right...I was not really impressed with the design either. I think Dvx looks better...to my eyes

Actually I think the NAB model was plastic....wasn't it? Anyhow, the design probably won't change too much between now and the release. I'm locking this one down now. :lipsrseal

.....Damn thing won't lock for some reason. Mod powers must be disabled. :(

Could this thread be any more pointless? Aside from ergonomic considerations, who gives a rat's rectum what it looks like?

Jan--make mine hot pink with yellow zebra stripes. Maybe some fuzzy dice fabric on the handles. Tinker-toy spokes and hubs out the sides. So long as it does what you've designed it to do, and images well, I could care less.

For some people, looks matter.

I much prefer shooting corporate stuff with a shoulder mount camera, just because it makes you look more professional to your client. They are then willing to pay you more  So the HD100 has a major lure...

I don't see why the thread should be locked... don't read it if you don't like it. Quite a few people are interested in posting it seems

"looks don't matter"

"Oh YES THEY DO"

"NOOOOOOO they don't"

"YEEEEEEEEEEES they do"

That kinda says it all. YES they *do* matter for some in terms of looking *professional* and all that kiss ass corporate BS. I read some stuff where Barry Green said he got jobs with other cameras because the DVX didn't look "pro enough", so I guess it's true!! But I'd say for the majority of *Independent* filmmakers, the only thing that will matter will be the footage. So it seems everyone is right!!

Who Cares! Having a better looking camera anit going to make you a better filmmaker! :)
Yes, but the quality of actor/actress on the casting couch is directly proportional to the professional perception of your camera. [that's a joke, a bad one but a joke nonetheless.]

For those worried about getting better gigs with a more professional camera, Ill trade you my Ikegami 730A for your HVX. Nothing looks more professional than whipping out a 3/4" tape and plugging it into the external recorder slung around your neck [with your bell bottoms] and an ORANGE camera.

Percieved proportions, casting couch, hhhuuummmmm...

Is that an HVX in your pocket or are you just happy to see me?

i imagine people responding the exact same way to personal computers about 10 years ago and look where we are now. like it or not, apple with their ipods and desktops have taught us all a lesson in marketing and style. would you pay the same price for a functionally same but better looking camera? yes. would you pay a little more for a better looking camera? i might and so would most. many members here are techs and pros but the same consumer style rules apply, just on a different scale.

iPod as well as many other apple products got tones to do with lifestyle. cameras, on the other hand, are tools.. more like.. guns! do you think that someone design a gun to be beautiful? no. it's design is a by-product of it's functionality.
and yes, i think the HVX is not extremely beautiful, but look at the XL1 and 2.. somebody sure thought of a rather spachshipy design there, what for?! its the most uncomfortable camera ever hit the market.

last thing about looking professional... do i have to carry a refrigerator sized camera on my shoulder, harm my back, degrade my operating, all just to make myself look professional? thats so stupid and depressing thought. throws me back to the days i had to shoot weddings with this JVC KY, an extremely heavy SVHS camera, while sony's VX1000 first showed up. my boss was laughing when i showed him this handy gray camera. but i just needed the money back then. i felt stupid to carry this HUGE thing on my shoulder when i knew that this small camera could do so much better, in all means, but making my boss earning his bucks.

...but it would be best if it looked the part AND gave excellent results.

I wanna get my hands on the HD100 - the form factor looks really good. I've heard praise of the prototypes so far. If the picture and sound are excellent too, it will be one hell of a camera.
