Jim,

Wow!
Beautiful.

I like your really delicate tilts and pans. And creative angles. The shot with the rams is a good example of this.

Your timelapse shot at around 1:40 is epic.

And the reel is just the right length. I wish I could cut mine down to 2 mins like yours.

Are you anywhere near Calispel?

Jim have you ever written about your documentary experiences here on DVXuser, or for magazines?

Thanks for the input.... To answer your question I do not write for any magazines except a bow hunter article I submitted that comes out in July 08. I have been interviewed for magazines like Post, Mac addict, DV studio daily and others. I would love to post a story or too and some near death experiences while filming elephants in Tanzania and some other crazy places. Kalispell is around 2 hours away from me. Thanks for the coments.

I love your shots. You do amazing work. Here's what I would do:

I like the pacing, music and shot selections, but I would get rid of the jump cuts and just add a few new shots. The jump cuts are a little distracting and don't go very well with the music/classic style of the demo.

The jump cut shots are not needed. I feel like in a demo you show something, then move on. Repetitive shots slow things down.

Filmaddict,

Cool. I see what you mean. I could add some different stuff instead on the fly fishing (3) shots and the brown bear (2). I guess i am old school on the cuts and like to tell a story but maybe not in a demo reel... Even in my shows I try to cut on scenes and use natural transisitions of animals walking off screen etc... instead of dip to color... cross dissolve....

I love constructive criticism it only makes you better in the long run.

Thanks again all. I couldn't resist so I posted this trailer of a future Television show that will be released in 2009. Anyway as you will see some of the same shots from my demo reel are in this trailer as well. I shot this show in October of 07 on the Alaskan Peninsula. This is my real job. DP and owner of an outdoor video production company. I sell stock footage in any spare time I have. I shoot write edit and narrate most of our shows then author them to DVD.... I like to think of it as National Geographic goes hunting...
