My Demo Reel - first impressions?

It's been about six months since I got my dvx100a, I can tell you that I got more out of this camera than my sorry one-chip sony dcr-trv70! So many opportunities came from this camera. I'm meeting with a producer here in my town soon, so made a demo reel of all the stuff I did from January to may. Hopefully I can get a PA job out of this? :) It's a little over a minute, I don't have a clue how long it should be. Let me know your thoughts --

Hi! I am brand new to these boards and just got my DVX yesterday. Wow - very impressive demo reel!

Can I ask you how you get that effect... I don't know what to call it, it looks like a push-pull with objects in the same frame, sort of like the girl is pulling toward the viewer and the background is being pushed back - how do you do that?

Thanks, and again, thanks for showing your reel - it gives newbies like me hope!

It looks to me like hiro separated the layers, so the background was doing sideways motion as the character was doing zooming motion. It's executed well, though. I like the undersaturated/high contrast look of your footage... and the color swap and correction work.

Keep up the excellent work and best of luck to you!

I think your stuff looks really great - especially the compositions and CC. Very nice work indeed. Good luck with the producer, but I think you made your own luck with this reel.

This looked nice but I have a few concerns:

1. My initial impression was that you did not have much experience because you devoted so much time to the one girl at the beginning. This tells me it's a friend of yours...maybe not but I'd be careful about it if you are sending it out to other people for work.

2. Also, I'm getting that "Magic Bullet" feeling from a lot of the looks you have created. Be sparing with these effects, they are already becoming a cliche.

3. In general, I think the effects are way too much. You should consider mixing it up with shots that look a little more raw, more organic. Not everyone will want a stylized look.

In general, I think you have some really nice shots but I think the reel is twice as long as it needs to be with the footage you chose. I would cut the girl footage in half and really be careful picking the best of your other shots to make it really tight.

Good luck with it. You have talent.

I agree a lot w/ disjecta...

It's true, if you're serious about using this for obtaining future jobs, seeing the girl so many times makes the viewer think "Wow this guy has only done like one project" or "Does this guy know anyone else?" It makes the viewer question your abilities.

I did like how it got switched up w/ the food stuff at the end though.

- Less girl
- Less MB

for the question earlier, I made copy and paste the video clip on a 2nd layer. I mask out the girl in the 2nd layer and add a deform effect.

Thanks for the comments & suggestions. I just got off the phone with the guy, I got an appointment this thursday. So I will have a lot of time to make the changes. The girl was my only resource at the beginning of all this. she's all over my website lol. I have her full consent to use it. It was my biggest problem, getting people to work for free I have just now begun to work with different actresses and actors. They now seem to want to be apart of my little gig after watching a few of my films. which is cool. I see that my bandwidth just ran out- sorry for all those who try to see it. it will be on again 12 AM.
