My D70s pics

Yesterday I held auditions for my movie. That was a dismal failure, only one person showed up....but someone there had this lovely MGA parked closeby, so I took the opportunity to take some pictures. I like the first one a lot, the second one is ok, and the last is just for reference if you don't know what car I'm talking about.

I finally picked up a pair of new shoes today, sending my 2 year old (and only) pair into practical retirement (except for working I suppose...no need to wear out my new shoes faster than I have to):

I REALLY dig the composition of the Rose.

Good work. It looks a tad dark, but that may be my monitor.

Colors are fantastic.

Funny, when I see the car shots I feel nothing, when I see the others I really feel something. Nice work Virum.

I agree with the rose shot... looks good... touch dark. My 70 is on the way as of today... woo-hoo.

Really? That surprises me. I got a lot of praise on another forum for the first Carrera (wallpaper request as well) and the interior picture of the mg got some too.

As for the rose shot being too dark....I want it dark which pushes monitor boundaries. I have a pretty good CRT with a lot of dynamic range and I think something looks great....and then I view it on another persons computer and it looks too dark. It's very frustrating....I've calibrated my monitor as best as I can though, so hopefully it'd print out fine.

The rose picture is my favorite picture so far. :)

No love for cars? :)

That's part of it. Cold hard metal doesn't really do much for me. Then again, it might be that your other photos have more interesting lighting (and colour). The rose and the fella's long shadow evoke something more for me, so I find myself looking at those again and again. My eyes still can't work out what's happening at the base of the rose. They're seeing a twisted, gnarled, green hand. :cheesy:

The fella in the shadow pic is actually me. I was listening to Stairway to Heaven about 30 minutes prior, and was singing it in my head...and as I was walking down the street looking for a picture to take I noticed how long my shadow was....right when I was singing:

As we wind on down the road
Our shadows taller than our souls

And I thought it'd make a nice picture. :)

As for the green at the base of the rose, it's a dead rose.

Uncolor corrected and uncropped:

I love the lighting in this image. I think it is beautiful and there isn't a single thing that I would change, I think it's incredible. Great work!

These pictures are really good. Virum, how do you have a DVX + Andromeda, and a D70 if the car you drive is supposedly so horrible? I would kill for your equipment.

You seemed to improve really quickly in your still camera skills.

Thanks bball. :)

Well, Dad bought the D70s for me (but he retains "squatting rights" as he put it).

I bought the DVX + Andromeda and the M2, and everything else for my movie (set supplies) etc. myself. I've been using money I've saved from when I was a wee little tyke and my job. I've been working a job for almost a year now that pays pretty well (and I do a little contract web and tutor work on the side which pays much better...just not steady enough and sometimes far between). I pretty much have only spent money on Christmas and birthday presents since I was working there.

I had a nice Mits 3000GT that I bought with an early graduation gift (my uncle was quite nice), but the tranny died on that so I managed to sell it for half of what I paid (ouch), and someone gave me the crappy car I've been driving. I was driving that along for two days and on the interstate I heard a loud clunk and then the tranny started slipping like hell and I had no reverse.

So I pushed that thing for seven months, because my movie is my priority. Which is why I was driving such a crappy car for 7 months and getting gas at midnight since it was always too busy without having reverse to go at any other time of day, lol.

I finally bought a new car though; a VW Bus. I've pretty much bought everything I need for my movie so far, and since I'm quitting my job for school in three weeks I wanted to get a new car before I started running out of money. I had set aside the rest of my graduation money and 10% of everything I make for a new car, and I had just had enough to buy it.

I love it, but I haven't had a chance to drive it much since something just broke in it, but it doesn't look like it'll be too serious. Got it for steal though. I'm working on getting it fixed now.

So right now i have about 140 bucks in the bank, thank god I just got a paycheck from work.

Short form: Priorities. The movie is/was more important

I know people who drive $50K cars and they think I spend too much on mics... they could buy my whole entire audio kit just by taking a little step down on the trim level of their car.

I know people who live in $500K houses and they think a G2 is pricey.

Don't waste a second of your time trying to help those people improve their movie making skills... tell 'em to sell their DVX and buy more turtle wax for the bmw...

Virum... you are justified in having good gear because you utilize it... I hope your friends and family appreciate your talent as much as your online pals. If nothing else it's cool to hear that your dad has an interest in the camera. Locally I might have one friend who can share any interest in this stuff... everybody else is all about what kind of car you drive... they'd be more impressed with an expensive watch.

My parents are incredibly supportive; I've taken over their garage and converted it into a 1930s period set....and dad's only bitched mildly. :D

Just kidding. He offered me the use of his garage when he heard me talking about renting a warehouse....and we'd never have gotten as far as we have if he hadn't. He's supported me all the way, and so has my mom.

My friends do too, they are donating time and such to help me out acting and tech-wise, and I appreciate it to no end. They are awesome.

It's been tough, but me and my friend actually realizing a movie we've been playing in our heads for almost 3 years. And it's awesome. Lots of compromises, but I think I'll be happy with the end result. It'll be one hell of a learning experience.

I don't regret one dime of the 12,000 dollars I've put towards this project. Thank god the equipment is reusable. ;)

But yeah, the movie has been keeping me from still photography. I hope to get back to it soon.

Joe: Thanks!

I wish my parents were as supportive as yours.

Every day my mom or dad says, "Drew, are you sure you want to be a director? I mean... you're so smart and you aren't even going to be putting it to good use."

Urg.

Not really happy with this one....it looked a lot cooler in my head.

And the keys to my new-to-me VW:

The keys look great in B&W, but I kinda like the psychedelic colors.
