My computer died :'-(

Fellow DVXers, I could use a little chearing up, so I apologize in advance for my forthcoming rant...

I HATE COMPUTERS
...and I'm now re-typing this post because a program opend a page in this window and killed the long post I'd just signed and was about to post.. :kali:
So here, re-typed, take 2:

My laptop died on my without warning on Friday. :crybaby:
I have no idea what is wrong with it. It worked fine in the morning, and just sat on my desk unplugged all day while I was at school. I came home and powered it up, it came on but didn't boot, just sat in black with the power lights on making a quiet buzzing sound. It was so locked up that even a 4 sec hold on the power button didn't help so I had to pull the power cable and battery. I put them ack in and hit power to re-boot, but nothing happend.
It's dead as a dodo and won't react to anything even in the slightest. I don't even get the charging LED when plugged in. I'll call tech support when they open tommorrow and see what's up with it. I'm out of waranty too... :furious3:

This really freaking sucks. I have everything important backed up, and I think the HD is fine anyway. But it probably means that I'm going to be stuck without a computer for a few weeks at least. (My participation in forums is going to be slowing down anyway in the coming monthes.) And I don't have the money right now to replace a 1.5 year old laptop.

God I hate computers. :badputer:

Also, off topic but rantable. Last week I also lost my USB memory and had to buy a new one. And I found out a Steadicam vest I just bought 2nd hand is (unbeknownst to the seller) broken and I need to get that fixed too.:nads: *sigh* Maybe this coming week will be better.

Only just over 7 weeks untill I get to see my Girlfriend again though. (It's been since August).

At least I have a jar of Nutella that I'm working through with a spoon to make me feel better. :)

Thanks for listening gang.

That pisses me off too. They offer these warranties when they should be warrantying the product anyways.

But they want us to pay extra for their product ?

Greedy bastards

Sucks dude. It's love hate with these machines. We are helplessly bound to them and it kills us when they show us that fact by breaking down.

Hope it gets fixed soon.

ahhhhgh! Mikko! But I need you! :(

well, not right now, but soon. Hope it all gets sorted out.

Why would your presence in the forums be "slowing down anyway"? For something really good, I hope. :)

It could also be that your ac adapter went bad. Mine did, and when i replaced it the computer worked fine. How old is your laptop?
_dvxwheelr

The adapter is fine - I even checked with my 2nd one (from the previous laptop that also died... :Drogar-Thinking(DBG ) and the Battery is fine too. No combination worked. It's definatly the laptop itself.

"naida" :Drogar-BigGrin(DBG) Not quite the bad word for it.. "Vittu" would be better. Thouh "naida" is funnier.

Terri,
The clue as to why my foruming will be slowing down was in my post. The "long distance" part of my relationship is coming to an end (thank god). but that does mean less 'net time, which is a fine trade as far as I'm concernd.
I also have various travels coming up that will help ease me out of this fantastic addiction I have to DVXuser.
But don't worry, I'll still be about. :)

- Mikko ... Once a DVXer, always a DVXer.

that does suck.... I had bought a decent laptop about 2.5years ago and it kept over heating so I took it in to best buy and although I still shop at best buy they really screwed me around on the warrenty that I had bought I almost had to leap threw hoops for proper servicing and in the end they decided to replace it with another but wanted to give a junk laptop (not even of comparable value ) retarded eh.... I put my foot down on that and they then presented me with serveral that I could choose from..... after though they informed me my laptop warrenty was now void and they would be happy to sell me a new warrenty... Screw them...... I got an HP and they offer extended warrenties directly.

So basically I understand what your going threw.....

It's not getting any better.

It's not getting any better.

GAAAHH!! :furious3: :furious3:

And the saga continues...

So I finally got tech support (ha!) on the line. they told me that it's out of waranty, there's nothgin they can do. It'll cost me somewhere up from €300 for a new motherboard (theoy couldn't/wouldn't give me an exact quote) and woud take them about 3-4 weeks to do!!

Stuff that, I got the address of the local "rapair center" which is hidden away in an industrial building with no signs or anythgin, hell to find. I spoke to the person in charge there. Who after a long heated discussion finally gave me a form that I can fill is (as it's my personal, not my companies, computer) that I can request a free post waranty repair on teh grounds that it's a faulty product. If they decided they don't want to do it, I'm obligated to pay an €48 assesment fee. Still no estimation of how long it will take.
And then he threatended me with a fraud lawsuit if I was lying on the form! Some customer service that is! I don't care what company you are, you don't threaten a customer who has had your product fail, and then is considering whether to pay you for it's repair with a lawsuit. I'm pissed.

So a call to the main customer service line later, I managed to get them to admit that I'm screwed and they have me by the balls, and they get to choose whether they will fix the faulty product or charge me more fees. (I wish I had recorded that part of the call.) Then I got transfered higher to someone who finally re-affirmed that I need to fill out this form and they they will process it in about a week and the rapair will take around another week from there.

So I'm down from having to pay hundereads of euro's for a month's reapir job to having them assess the case and probabaly rapair it all in around 2 weeks. And only charge me if it's not them at fault. Better. but I'm still pissed at what it took, and what crap I got, to get there.

I stopped by a Consumer Rights advisor this afternoon and he said that the deal I got in the end is reasonable and I tend to agree.

I'm still really pissed off at their behaviour through all this. So I'm going to name them. :violent5: This is Acer I'm dealing with. (For the last time obviously.)

Mikko,

I feel your pain. I really do. Buy an Apple. Stay away from Windows based computers. I've spent about 3000 trying to keep my HP pavillion running, and all it did was sit on my desk. My Apple Powerbook G4, however has been sadly abused for years, and never failed to boot up. Costs more, I know, probably a hell of a lot more in Finland, but worth the price, if only to save yourself the degradation of dealing with tech support. Use your Acer to hold up a wobbly table, or dispose of it in an environmental correct manner. I know Finland is pretty strick about that stuff.

Mikko, I have some really good drugs from the hospital here. :) I'm just sayin...

And the reason for your upcoming absence is really the only forgiveable one. :)

Good luck with the repair and good for you for standing your ground. Thanks for naming them, too. I will be getting a laptop in the semi-near future and will take that into consideration when it comes to giving my money away.

Wow, I had my motherboard replaced on my PC, I did'nt think it could happen on laptop, damn thats bad luck man.

How many continous hours did you do on your laptop? I first thought it could be that the one of the cells collapsed in your battery, but since the power light does not come up when plugged into the main (have you tried a different power adaptor?) the mainboards propably fried.

If its your collapsed cell, there is hope I once "revived" a deal cell, so its possible if thats the case.

Acer has sucked forever with these typed of things. I find Dell really does a decent job when you have an account with them. They practically replaced every part in one older computer for free even though it was 4 years old. AND they sent a tech to come over and do it. Thats service. If you are a joe smo though you get sent to India when you call customer service and good luck trying to understand them and getting them to understand you. [SIZE=-1]Thats not a stab at India its just why would someone have phone representation that you cant understand if you are from the US. THey should make it where if you call from a certain area code you get sent to a rep that speaks your language well. If the person says motherboard and I cant understand what they said, it ties up the phones with the going back and forth with trying to figure out what they said. I have been on the phone sometimes and it takes an hour or two to get through a simple conversation.

With apple you wind up paying a fortune everytime they upgrade the OS with all the updates for the softwares. Its like if you dont pay, you dont get to play.
