Get A Mac!

Get A Mac!

I've been an avid PC user for almost 15 yrs, and recently switched to an apple laptop running OS X. Now i'm tyring to find a way to ditch my P4 box for a shiny new Mac G4. They are fantastic and every day that i have to use a PC at work, I learn to hate it more and more. I have a challenge running for anyone that can show me something that they do on their PC that can't be done either more effeciently or more intuitively on a Mac. Any challengers?

Miznick,

How about not having to render beforehand to see effects (color correction, compositing etc.) in realtime within the editor on a system that costs less than 700 dollars?

Heh - that's the only reason that keeps me from switching to FCE - tried it, can't stand that rendering bullshit

just my 2 cents

Try running WinXP Pro SP1 on your mac?

Just kidding of course. I know I'm stirring a sh*t-storm by diving into the whole Mac vs. PC bit....

I have spent a lot of time dealing in this area and here is what you should do:

What computer do you have? eg processor, ram, hdd, gfx, sometimes old computers just bite the dust and its best to buy a new one all together, sometimes viruses will stuff up your computer and its also worth buying a new one.

I strongly believe that if you are to own a computer you MUST:

* Get windows xp with service pack 2 and have windows update set to automatically download the updates. There are so many security vulnerabilities in 98 and ME.

* Get an ADSL connection, some people believe this is way to expensive but i have seen ADSL cheaper then dial up these days! (cause ADSL2 is on its way...)

* The adsl modem/router must have firewall protection enabled

* Or alternatively enable windows firewall

* Get Norton Antivirus 2005 - (if you dont have it turn off your computer now and go get it! you are at risk!) and make sure you have all these turned on

Auto-Protect ON

Internet Worm Protection ON

Email Scanning ON

Automatic live update ON

and do a virus scan weekly (daily if you can)

* Ad-Aware SE Personal Edition - vital its like the wheels on your car (almost) GET IT NOW if you don’t have it www.download.com - update daily and scan daily.

* Spyware doctor - www.download.com - update daily scan daily.

* Pop up stopper - www.download.com - get it if you don’t have it!

* if you get an email saying you won a free holiday... no you haven’t delete it!

* don’t visit porn sites/warez sites/hacking sites or you will get viruses!

so basically your computer will crash if there is a virus/malware/adware/spyware going.

your computer will crash if the hardware is just old - you cant expect it to last forever

if not you say you use msn 7 and it crashes - you are probably using MSN 7 BETA version - beta means its going to be buggy and could cause things not to work,,, how do I know this? because when i use msn 7 beta and go to draw a message my computer crashes! so go get MSN 7 or MSN 6....

I figure a pc is nowadays cheap enough to have just a purpose built one for editing / aftereffects. I am waiting for the dual core processors and then I am building myself a machine for the matrox card alone, ie just premiere and after effects, with a couple of gigs of ram and an enrty level processor, that should out do any rendering beast.

Oh great!! Another PC vs. Mac thread. Just what we needed. Here's a simpler solution:

1. Quit going to all the pr0n sites
2. Get some virus, spyware, spam protection
3. Upgrade the Ram for faster performance
4. Make sure the system is staying cool....this will cause MANY crashes and bugs if it runs hot
5. Keep the *Winders* updated with all the patches, etc.
6. Quit going to all the pr0n sites
7. Defrag the Hard Drive often, this will increase performance
8. And lastly....Quit going to all the pr0n sites. But if you insist....I must recommend http://www.thehun.com Spam, Spyware, and Virus Free pr0n for your viewing pleasure. Of course *I* have never been there.....that's just what I *heard*!!

i have a p4 2.8 1g ram ati 9600pro seagate sata120g, about a year old XPC, do have norton2005 and adware and msn7 not beta. it does crash daily at least once sometimes maybe 5 times, but only crashes when chatting on msn, no body else crashing? don't no what's wrong

Well, you know the old joke
Man went to the doctor and said "it hurts when I do this"

What did the doctor say?

Most likely there is a bug with MSN7 that is causing this. Try a google search.

lol. Sounds fun ST. You too cba. Just what everyone wants to do daily. PC people are funny. I have a buddy thats a systems analyst for a big retailer. He's been in computers for years. His girlfriends PC crashes weekly, they can't get it to download images from her camera, they are constantly downloading new virus updates, and firewalls. When they want to see their pics, they come over and have me download them and burn them a disc. But God forbid I mention that word. That horrible word... M.... A.... nooooo.
not THAT debate again. Aaaaa PPL....
no. I can't say it.....

Hey I have no problems with Macs
However, I have been a PC user for years, and I can tell you right now, I have never had virus problems, with windows XP I leave my computer on for months without restarting, and the only crashes that I have experienced have not been total system crashes but software crashes caused by poorly written software like Adobe Premiere (thank god for vegas). HOwever, at my school it is strictly macs, same with my work, and I can tell you that I have had my problems with them as well. Hmmmm, computer that wont recognize cameras, crash unexpectidly, don't wake up after going to sleep.
So anybody that says that it is a PC only thing is wrong. It happens to them all. Personally I don't care what people use, as I each OS and system has it's advantages and dissadvantages. If you want to start another MAC vs PC debate which will end up being completely pointless in the end, with everybody hating everybody, than go ahead. But I'll warn you right now that its a long road to nowhere, so tread carefully.

I have no problem with my five PC. I only use intel CPU and bridge controller

Yeh, Scharky, you are right, really. They can all be a pain in the ass at times. To each his own. At least we can all agree on cameras...

Ha ha - you guys are all right on - the PC vs Mac argument is always a fun one though. I mainly edit on my Xeons, but use a Mac laptop. They both have their merits. And as long as a DVX is at the front end, there are no worries.

I have to agree with the consensus that you cannot be too far off track if you have a DVX delivering the footage.
I'm one of the weird ones that started out using FCP on Mac, and then migrated to PC. I sold all the G4 equip in 2003, and built a purpose built P4 editing monster. I'm probably jinxing myself saying this, but I have NO problems with this PC locking up or crashing on me. I want it to run FAST FAST FAST, so I run NO anti-virus, no anti-spyware, no scanners or any other crap that would run in the background and take even one precious processor cycle away from the editing app. The only thing running in the background is my render engine, cranking out the effects and edits faster than I can move the playline.
HOW do I do this?
My number one tip is NEVER connect your workstation to the internet. Nothing stops the viruses, spy and malware, and other spurious crap than a 10' gap in the copper wire.
My number 2 tip is get a GOOD professional disk defragmenting program like Executive Diskeeper Pro, and run it whenever it says you need to, but not in the background! The disc defrag program that comes with XP is second rate.

is pirated copy of XP more subsceptible to crashing? I'm not saying I use pirate because I don't have a boat, just heard pirated XP crashes more often, is that true???

yes, very true, the pirate copy may have modules missing. (modules - parts of the software). Or a really mean pirate may have modified it to do bad stuff...

but isn't a copied is from a copy of the original? just that the serial # is pirated right?
