My brother had a kayak accident and his Sony V1 got dumped into salt water (and ruined.) I own a Panasonic HMC150 and an HPX300 and told him I'd help him decide on a new cam. I know he doesn't want to spend a whole lot of money, so I made up a chart comparing the 150, 170 and the new Sony EX1R for total cost of camera and 3 hours worth of media cards (not including extra batteries.)
To make it apples to apples, I got all the prices from B&H:
HMC150 + one 32gb SDHC card = $3400, weight 4.3 lbs including battery
HPX170 + (2) 64gb P2 card and (1) 32gb P2 card = $6905, weight 4.2 lbs (not sure if that includes battery) Note that the 170 comes with a 16gb P2 card.
EX1R + (2) 16gb SxS cards = $7360, weight 4.2 lbs (not sure if that includes battery) Note that the EX1R comes with one 16gb SxS card.
When I look at this list, it seems like the 150 is the way to go - I'm happy with mine, but I admit I rarely use it since I love the HPX300 so much. Since I'm posting in the HPX170 forum, why should I recommend the 170 over the 150?
The monkey wrench in this list is the Sony Z5 - he could view his existing V1 tapes with that and stay in the HDV world...
