my Balance EX1 solution

After some thinking I have found a great solution for the EX1 handheld issues due to the balance of the camera. Basically I have a 15mm rod mounted to a weight. This then goes under the zacuto plate with v-lock battery.

Check out some pics

that's exactly what I've been thinking about, how does it feel zacuto shoulder pad, what's the damage?

The shoulder pad is ok, the rods don't feel thru. Actually the only downside is the total added weight. But it's still lighter then a digicam. Here is a close up:

Yes, it's not just an expensive piece of weight! ;-)

The base plate has a d-tap plug, so i have a cable going from d-tap to the original dc plug of the EX1. I keep a small battery in the camera just in case.

Also the EX1 has a low voltage warning so it's a good setup this way and I can shoot for two days straight! I also have a hirose on the baseplate to power a receiver or light.

cable and weight

cable and weight

I cut the original sony cable and fitted a d-tap, i never use the cam on direct power and when needed the v-locks power the cam for hours.

The total weight is around 6 kg. and the ex1 is 2.8 kg

btw zacuto has just released something very similar to my "invention"

A very slick solution compared to mine, costly though

I am trying to figure out which baseplate you have mounted to the zacuto redplate? I have a similiar configuration but my pro-x gp-s power adapter has a d-tap that basically says it's for powering a light. I originally thought I could power the ex1/3 with this setup but now i am not so sure?

can you give me the model # of the v-lock plate you're using? any help would be greatly appreciated!

thanks

it's an IDX P-V2 plate, a solid fit. To my knowledge any d-tap can power the ex series. As long as the voltage from the battery connected is ok.

i made a d-tap to sony cable using a d-tap plug and a ac plug from radio shack. cost me like $25 total. now, powering the ex1 from a switronix v-mount battery i can go a couple of days on one charge. awesome. i took a idx v-mount to AB adapter plate and attached it to a chrosziel rod mount i had. the battery mounts on the back of my rods like the zacuto plate. pretty cool.
