My baby(DVX) is DEAD!!!

Re: My baby(DVX) is DEAD!!!

The theads on the tripod mount snapped off a few weeks after having it when I was tightening down the tripod plate. It was not a problem still worked fine, but since I was sending it in to be fixed, they might as well fix that too. When I talked to Panasonic about it, they told me this was not uncommon because of the "soft metal" used.
As far as sending it to K&N, they are the top of the list of places to send it for repair in the southeast. They actaully gave me two places to send it to in Atalnta.

Dolby,
Go over to CML-video(Cinematography Mailing List-Video) and make a post over there for Jan Crittenden. She is a dealer for panasonic, and might be able to help you. Or email

That struck me as odd too. I also womder why they didn't have it shupped to (is it Elgin?), as opposed to a subcontractor here in Atlanta.[/quote]

reference the elgin repair center...here's a post i found on another board recently:
----
Hi, my name is John and I was the Panasonic engineer that headed up the repair of the DVX100's at Panasonic. Panasonic closed the whole Midwest service center, three of us bought it and opened our own shop. We are authorized to do both in and out of warranty repairs and can help all of you with all of your DVX100 service needs. I hope this blatent attempt at self promotion doesn't offend anyone, but I know how hard it is to find good service and we can certainly offer that, at quite a reasonable price. Please contact me via E-mail or visit our site. www.fvvs.com

as for the atlanta locations...they are both listed on the panasonic website as authorized service centers...

No....think about it. A scam artist buys the camera the weekend prior to an event. Works the daylights out of the camera and returns it within 7 days for a free rental. B&H has to put their foot down somewhere. Not only to protect them, but their customers as well. Do you want to buy a well used rental?

Sorry for the rant.

Re: My baby(DVX) is DEAD!!!

I know I'm gonna catch hell for this post, but I had problems with my dvx about five weeks after I got it. It ate a tape during capture. I was very concerned that a new camera with six hours on the heads would eat a tape; in my mind, such seemed indicative of some inherient flaw in the camera. I wanted to at least exchange it, and tried both panny pro services and that regional rep named above. The customer service guy was not much help and the regional guy never got back to me. I finally sent it back to Videosmith, where I purchased it, and they fixed it for free (quickly) and sent it back. However, they could not offer any opinion as to what caused the problem.

Panasonic has a good product here, but they better not sit on their laurels and should take a lesson from the still photograph arena. I was a newspaper photographer for fifteen years before changing careers, and I saw Nikon slip from the front runner to the also-ran, behind Canon, because of what was perceived, by myself and the professionals I knew, as a disregard for quality control, generally poor design, and lack of responsiveness to its professional customers. If you look at sports photographers now on the side lines or at White House events, you'll see a lot more of those white lenses than black ones.

I find it hard to believe that Panasonic can't design a camera with circuit boards that can last more than five months in Florida. I doubt Floridians are replacing their simple digital still cameras every five months due to the humidity and the salt air. Don't get me wrong, I like the dvx 100, but innovation is worthless if the company does a piss poor job of supporting its customers.

Hope you get your camera back quickly, and may the road rise up to meet up and may the wind be at your back.

You can always modify.

Re: My baby(DVX) is DEAD!!!

You all are scaring me. I have always wanted a Canon. Recently my friend bought a dvx100. He was so happy, I purchased a 100a. Love the camera but hope this post is not the norm. There are millions of electronics devices in Florida working fine. What's up with the warranty?

Re: My baby(DVX) is DEAD!!!

By the way, bought mine from J&R electonics, they have 30 day return and are factory authorized. I found them thru the Canon web site since they are Canon authorized also. I bought Panny at the last minute. I like it but it better be dependable. Or 24p is worthless.

Re: My baby(DVX) is DEAD!!!

I am still waiting on Allen Carmichael, Field Specialist from Panasonic to call me back. I understand that he found out about this tread yesterday and contacted me via email. And as far as Panasonic not covering the camera under warranty, the only ones that said it was not covered is the service center in Atlanta who (I think) were just going by the book.

BTW, the weekend it died, I used the a sony one chip camcorder the is used for a helmet cam recorder to shoot with and the footage is almost unusable. I hate to say it, but the DVX100 and 24p has spoiled me.

Re: My baby(DVX) is DEAD!!!

Seriously though, this $3000 piece of equipment is well worth anyone's purchase. I have never been so pleased with video in my life. I am slightly annoyed with this humidity issue though, considering a friend of mine used his VX2000 in dance clubs in Europe and NY, where the humidity level is so ridiculously high that his lens would fog up every 2 minutes. He's used his camera for four years. A day in Florida destroying an EXPENSIVE camera, without a warranty covering it??

I hope my humidity woes are over (under the "Whoa" comment on this board), but I'd like to feel somewhat safe and secure in that Panasonic can honor their product more without shutting their customer service lines down an hour early and keeping people on hold for nearly an hour and a half. I'd expect more from a company that has given us all so much to talk about, and so much excitement to film with.

Re: My baby(DVX) is DEAD!!!

Dolby, our field engineer has contacted K&N Electronics in Atlanta to attempt an amicable solution to your problem. However, because K&N has more than one of this model for service they have no way of determining which is your unit. Please contact Allen Carmichael at carmichaela@us.panasonic.com and identify yourself and he will be happy to work with you.

Re: My baby(DVX) is DEAD!!!

Last year I went to the Bahammas and left out of Florida. I took my small consumer Panasonic DV camcorder and had no problems with it. I did alot of research before purchasing my 100a. I feel Panasonic cares about it's customers. May be just the service center you sent it to.
