My B&H to Convergent Design to Sony Services Experience. (Related to 7Q)

I am telling this experience because I could not find another thread anywhere with the same issue I was experiencing, but also to talk about what it was like communication and help wise from all 3 companies. I am not going to write every detail of every single issue I had and test I conducted as that would take up even more space and I don't have time to write that much! But, here is a good description of what happened to me for that person that gets their 7Q for their FS700 and it doesn't work.....sometimes, and sometimes all the time, and somtimes works perfect!

Got my 7Q over a month ago and began testing. I had plenty of editing I still needed done on a couple of projects before the next upcoming shoot I had scheduled which was set to use the FS700 7Q combo for the first time in a real production. I got everything set up and got the FS700 talking to the 7Q. I read the whole manual on the 7Q and had been following threads here on dvxuser actively for months on end while waiting to get the 7Q so I was familiar with what limitations of recording modes to expect and had not been released yet along with known bug issues scheduled to be fixed. At this time, April firmware 1.11 was the most current to be using on the 7Q. I filmed a few different things outside in my yard for testing, brought the footage back in and was stoked at the quality. I filmed some in 2k RAW to experience the DNG workflow and some in 4K2HD ProRes to see what it could handle in grading. All in all, was getting very excited.

The first day I took it out for a day of shooting in the woods I was 5min into using the unit when it started blinking in and out while recording. The whole unit was turning on and off and upon turning back on was trying to immediately record again. I was using camera trigger at the time and and had stopped recording from the FS700 but the 7Q would not stop trying to record. I removed the battery as I could not get the unit to stay stable long enough for me to shut it down properly. Put the battery back on and had a black screen. However some form of communication was still happening as I saw the 7Q saying NO INPUT and then all of a sudden saying a frame rate it was never set too and then saying NO INPUT AGAIN. After 20min of removing batteries and shutting down and turning back on both the FS700 and 7Q along with trying to switch to different record modes on both units to try and get them talking properly to each other again I was left with a black screen and a no input signal. Yes, I also tried disconnecting and reconnecting the HD-SDI cable which was the Odyssey name brand cable 75ohm rated. I retired the system for the day and tried my best not to let it ruin my day! LOL, pretty hard to not though.

For the next 2 days I tested the unit in my office on a tripod next to me while I was editing. I took battery power out of the equation by hooking both the FS and the 7Q to their wall mounted power supplies. Through tons of testing, I could not get very much consistency of this error occurring but the bottom line is that inevitably...it kept happening. Sometimes after 10min of use, sometimes after 2 hours of filming a corner in my office, it would kill recording and loose signal at which point every time I would reboot and try to record again it would loose signal after a few seconds. Also, often times when switching to different frame rates or resolutions, the 7Q would start blinking in and out. This most consistently happened though on higher frame rates in 2K. When I went to 240fps I would often see a blank screen (no visual monitor feed) on the 7Q and it listed 100fps for a while and then would say no input. In putting it to 2K 60fps it would do similar bouncing in and out of 50p and no signal. I am in FLORIDA so NTSC is what I am set for, the PAL frame rates really confused me. The reason all of this was so confusing is how randomly it would happen and with no camera movement happening at all? Why would it work for an hour and then start exhibiting this behavior? Why could I sometimes film 240fps and other times couldn't get more than a black screen?

EXPERIENCE WITH CONVERGENT DESIGN HELP
Submitted a support ticket to CD after the first day of error testing explaining situation. Got an email response 2 days later saying they had not seen or heard of this issue before. That was it, no tips to try or anything. I put a call into CD and talked directly with Dan Keaton. He was extremely nice and immediately diagnosed the problem as a faulty cable. They overnighted me a new one for FREE. That was very nice and helpful however, it did not fix the issue. At this point I am supposed to be filming the next night for a music video that took a lot of organizing to get together. After explaining the issue to the band we decided to push the shoot back 2 weeks when everyone would be available again in order to use the 7Q which they had paid extra for to use on production.

EXPERIENCE WITH BandH
I called BH and talked with their tech department on about the issues and with still qualifying for the 30 day return policy, they recommended I exchange the unit out for another one. They supplied free shipping label and within 2 days, I had a brand new 7Q. Super fast, super nice, BH was really on the ball here. I got the new 7Q set up and it was working great!!!! I was so excited! After 4 hours of recording the corner of my office in different frame rates, there were no issues!!!

BACK TO CONVERGENT DESIGN
I was however locked into demo mode all JULY 4th weekend and could not get a hold of the ONE person at CD who had the ability to transfer my FS700 RAW option over to the new 7Q. That was a bit frustrating! I wanted to go catch some fireworks and after tasting these robust files, I really didn't want to film in AVCHD. Over the course of the weekend, I went ahead and tested more....still in demo mode and just of the corner of my office. The error started to occur again!!! WHY, WHY???!!! LOL. But the issue only seemed to be occuring now on the HFR modes whereas before, it would happen more often on HFR modes, but still happened inevitably on any mode. I called and talked to Dan Keaton some more, he had me shoot some pics of the the SDI connections on both the FS and the 7Q. He diagnosed from the pics that the BNC connections look good so it shouldn't be the issue. So....I put the call into SONY that Monday.

MY EXPERIENCE WITH SONY SERVICES
I called the Sony Service Center in Teaneck NJ where I had sent my FS several months ago for the 4K upgrade in gearing up toward the 7Q purchase. I hit a hiccup budget wise and had to hold off on the 7Q until recently so I never got to test anything other than SLOG2 in AVCHD, which worked fine. I talked with Lou Flefleha in their repair department. He could not have been any nicer or a better listener to the full situation. The plan was to send the cam in along with the 7Q for testing. If they discovered it was problem on their end pertaining to the 4K upgrade, they would cover everything at no cost, if it was on the 7Q, we would go from there on the billing for their time spent. A little nervous I was....HA, but he said they would work with me the best the could if worse came to worse. What else can I do? Surely at this point it made since it was the camera and NOT the 2 7Q's I tried. They supplied an overnight shipping label to me for free and I had 7 days before our REschelued shoot to take place. I was nervous thinking I might still have to rent a camera, pay for that, and possibly pay some huge sony service fee and end up with a 7Q and FS700 that still don't like each other. This all hitting after I dropped $5k on getting a 7Q, SSD's Batteries, rigging it out, etc. Lou at Sony called me 3 different times the following day once my package was received and we walked through getting the misbehavior to happen and exploring a few possibilities. I was really surprised how personalized this all was for such a large company. Then I didn't hear anything for 5 days through the weekend until the day before it was listed I needed to have the camera back by. Sony emailed me saying they ordered a part that was supposed to come in today and their goal was to install, test, and get the camera to me tomorrow. They didn't say what they were replacing. The next day my FS700 and 7Q showed up by 12:30pm. EVERYTHING HAS WORKED FLAWLESSLY SINCE!!!! They had to replace the VC BOARD, did a full alignment, and reinstalled the 4K option. There was no charge for anything. I was so incredibly relieved!!!

All in all it was an extremely stressful and time consuming few weeks trying to trouble shoot while having deadlines on multiple edits happening along with gearing up and rescheduling a big 3 day shoot. I will say that BH is worth buying from just because of the comfort and assistance they provide in getting something replaced very fast and with no hassle. Convergent Design feels a bit understaffed. Dan Keaton was very nice and helpful as much as 1 guy could do, but there was a lot of misfired calls I had to make along with multiple emails trying to get responses and help for transferring over my FS700 RAW option. If that had been the weekend I was supposed to film, I would have been completely screwed! Thank god we rescheduled the shoot for 2 weeks later and not 1 as there was a lot of money tied up in renting the location, lights rigs and towers, man lift, etc. SONY really came through and my end conclusion of them is that for someone having had Panasonic Cams, Canon Cams, and now Sony, I hope SONY keeps up the great line of large sensor interchangeable lens system cameras they have been for this last few years because I really feel secure if I need help from them, they can do it! So major props to Sony, major props to BH, major props to Dan Keaton..but Convergent Design as a whole left me feeling a bit nervous if I get in a tight spot for needed support.

Long read, again this is for someone who has similar issues with your 7Q and FS700....it might be your FS700 VC BOARD!

I'm glad it all worked out for you Ash. I had a somewhat similar support experience as you did.

While I think CD overall has good customer service, I think there's a tech support disconnect. I also feel that Dan Keaton is a person you MUST speak with if you are having serious tech issues before you mail back your unit. I was one of the early adopters of the 7Q and got it a few weeks after it came out. I kept getting the "Miss-Matched SSD" error and crashes when using camera trigger. CD tech support had no idea what was going on and I had to mail back my 7Q TWICE, wasting tons of time and shipping costs.

I was so frustrated after the second mail back so I randomly called Dan Keaton, who had much better tech understanding than the CD tech support. He told me the Miss-Matched SSD was a firmware issue and suggested a good method to avoid it (which worked like a charm) and also told me to avoid the camera trigger until the next firmware. I wish that I had spoken with Dan first which would have saved me tons of time and FedEx bills.

During this whole debacle, I also took my FS700 to Sony Service Center LA who tested both the FS700 and the 7Q on their unit. The conclusion was my FS700 was fine. Sony was super, super helpful and very easy to deal with. They never even asked for any type of paper work or proof of purchase, just quickly took me to their tech bench and started testing away. Amazing.

I did think it was strange that Dan knew so much about what was going on with 7Q issues while in-office CD tech support was so in the dark. Their tech data base needs to be more Convergent :) Early adapter blues I guess.

My unit seems to run well these days, so fingers crossed.

Very interesting Gene. Yeah, Sony ROCKED! Dan at CD is on it as much he can be for the one man band. Other CD contact I had was sparse.

I put ithe 7Q to the test though for 3 long shoot nights over this weekend and yeah, in the end, I am so happy to have the 7Q as part of my production now. The results are fantastic and it was also great having such a large OLED monitor that other band members could be looking through while I was filming. Everyone was getting so excited about what they were seeing and it was just log footage. Much more powerful demo tool of what we are getting than just watching back on the FS LCD.

On another note, I went ahead and snagged an A7s as well last week for the night shooting I had in this production and really want to see the 7Q work for it as well. I know it's on the roadmap, but the roadmap can be loooong. The XAVC-S seems to be pretty good but in simultaneously experiencing the A7s as a new cam and the FS700 with 7Q (basically a new camera) it was hard for the A7s to compete (which should be the case I know). Great low light, but a lot softer overall even during day and I am attributing a lot of that to the codec. Also, ProRes is working great on my computer, better than AVCHD, but XAVC-S seems harder on my computer than AVCHD which I thought would not be the case being less compressed at 50Mbs vs AVCHD's 24-28Mbs.....?

Interesting read, and nice to hear everything worked out fine. Unfortunately We in Scandinavia have to send our Sony cameras to United kingdom but I had a really good experience with them as well. A personalised experience and it felt like I was communicating to a person who was trying to help me. Good to hear that it might not have been a random occasion from Sony's part :)

B&H earned my loyalty on a few bad experiences like this in the past. They always do whatever they can to help the customer and their return/exchange policy is the best I've ever used.

B&H is the best run camera retailer, PERIOD. For major stuff like the FS700 or the 7Q, I try to buy locally in LA in case something bad happens and I can quickly drive to the dealer. But everything else is B&H for the most part, except niche gear. Their website and customer service is the best by far.

I wish our experience with Sony went that smoothly. Sony Teaneck has two of our fs700's right now and it is a nightmare to get them on the phone. Constantly transferred to the Philippines and nearly impossible to talk to anyone at Teaneck center. We got a $2421 quote to fix a fiddly ND wheel on one of the cams.

Hi Weasel,

The key is to get a direct contact at the service center, otherwise they transfer you to their Philippines call center which is completely USELESS. I was so frustrated until I just went into the service center and talked to them directly and got the direct number for future contact. I don't know though, each service center is probably different. The LA one is really good.

But yeah, $2421 for an ND wheel? That's outrageous.

Holy Moley! That is an outrageous price for something like that!!!

The only direct person I talked to in their tech department was Lou FleFleh and he was awesome. You could try specifically asking for him? Actually there was one time I called Sony Service there at Teaneck and I guess I was sent to the Philippine call center at which point they transferred me to the LA Sony Service Center on accident. There I got to talk to Edgar who was also really nice and helpful. He checked on my cameras status for me along with a little other help. He explained their call center is currently in a transitional period and yes, they are misdirecting some of the calls.

Sorry to hear that is the scenario you are dealing with.

We are very sorry for your negative experience but happy to hear that you found satisfaction in the end.

A few notes:

- It took two days for you to get a response from Convergent Design. That is too long and we apologize. I don't know if it was a weekend but still you needed assistance. We have since added more staff specifically to help in Customer Technical Support.

- The initial response you received was not very helpful. That is also not good and we again apologize. Our expanded Technical Support staff is getting training to better assist clients in a proactive way.

- Dan Keaton helped you out when you called us. Thinking the problem might be in our product, Dan arranged to send you a free cable.

- When the new cable didn't solve the problem, without contact us first you reached out to B&H and decided to exchange the unit. Now we hit the July 4th holiday weekend and Dan was unable to arrange having the FS700 record option ported over to the new unit (we also need to have it removed from the one you sent back to B&H, but that's another matter). We have several people who can arrange to port the record option but no one was available on the holiday weekend. We had Tech Support available, but not the porting of a record option from one unit to another (not something that happens too much).

- In the end, there was nothing wrong with the Odyssey7Q, either of them. Sorry to hear that there was an issue in your camera, but good for Sony for being so helpful and responsive in fixing the issue in such a timely manner.

Hey Mitch,
Yes, there was no problem with the 7Q it turns out and I have no complaints about the actual product. I love the footage it is getting me. I had shoots coming up, my 30 day BH return policy was about to be up, and their tech support recommended I return the unit so I had to act fast to explore the possibility it was the new addition to my gear set and not the camera that had never had issues with otherwise.

Even as long as that first post I wrote was, I still skipped listing a few things of what I went through in troubleshooting and communication. So...what I do want to point out is that I did email DENISE directly at CD who I had spoken with on the phone and communicated with via email. I messaged her 3 days before I received my new 7Q replacement from BH to let her know that I greatly appreciated the speedy assistance to try and resolve my issue but because the cable did not fix the problem, after talking to BH support, I had sent my 7Q back for a replacement and wanted to know what I would need to do to get my FS700 RAW option transferred over to the new unit once it arrived. So this way I could get back up and running as fast as possible without a learning curve of steps that might need to be taken. She never replied. I got the new 7q 3 days later on a Thursday before noon and after multiple phone call attempts and emails, I did not get my FS700 option transferred over until Monday.

I am happy to hear more tech support has been added and I do appreciate your apology for my experience. Again, no complaints whatsoever in the direction of Dan Keaton's assistance. No complaints about the quality of product the 7Q is.

Has anyone in the Forum had problem with the 7Q ? Within 3 month, I have to send it for checking and repair for 2 times already. Cost a lot of time and $$$ :( While my client still crying for Fs700 raw and 4k for a TVC early next week, I do not have other choice but to wait CD to check the Unit. Do not know whether you guys have the same problem like me or any tips/trick to safely use 7Q because it seems quite fragile ... (At least for me)

Mine has been rock solid.....ask CD about a loaner.

Yes I heard a lot of good thing about 7Q before I experience some matter with it. I myself still love it cus it offer such a great thing but if only it is more reliable and consistence in term of quality.

Well in my case, it did turn out to be my camera and not the 7Q. Not sure what issues you have had with 7Q. If they are similar to mine it might be the camera, if not would like to hear what problem you are experiencing so I can be aware of it if I run into the same symptoms.

Just a good word in about CD...Dan has been fantastic as well as the couple of times I called tech support. If I can't find the answer online, then I call Dan. For someone to put his cell phone on the Internet from a company, or to post to call him about an issue, that is impressive.

I haven't needed much service, more like hand holding for the brain dead, and Dan never missed a beat. Considering they more or less don't have competition on the 7Q, one might expect service akin to a government monopoly all unionized, lawyered up and knowing they can't get fired, but they have been awesome.

I wonder if Dan ever has time to sleep....... lol

Agree that Dan is supportive and quite easy to talk with him online, can't complain about that part however you know, when you paid for 1 item and it is broken twice, you lose customer, relationship, deals. It could not be a good experience no matter how good is the product.
