My Audio Kit

LuckyStudio 13

The Tapeless One
Thanks to a lot of very helpful soul here especially MattinStl, I managed to gather up my basic humble audio kit. Can you guys tell me what you think and what should be the next step.

I already have 3 commercials up on the local tv station here, and now I am thinking of venturing into Documentaries and Short Films.

1) AT 4073a shot gun.

2) AT 4053a super cardioid with slip on metal screen (cost $32 vs the $140 BBG). I decided to go with this as the complete Oktava mk12 with BBG will only be a bit cheaper than the AT 4053a with the screen. http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?A=details&Q=&is=REG&O=productlist&sku=68164

3) Rode alluminium boom pole.

4) K-tek Zeppelin with KSM soft mount.

5) a Shure fp24 mixer with porta brace.

6) Sony MDRV6 headphone

7) Jay Rose : Producing Great Sound for Digital Video book

8) Rycote WInd Jammer for AT 4073a

9) Rode Video Mic (for the Panasonic gs500 B Cam)

Looking to get a decent Recorder next, I am Looking really hard in either the Sound Devices 702 or the Tascam HD-P2. If I only deal with 2 channels now, should i ditch the Shure fp mixer and go straight into the 702 or Tascam ??

or should I look into getting a SD302 first
before going to buy a recorder.

thanks guys, looking forward to hear from you.

if you are going to documentary - couple of wierless and better mixer befor you run to buy external recorder
and if you buy later , buy something that have tc - 702 at least .

I agree with my good friend Oleg on this one. A couple of wireless setups and a 302 will give you a much better doc kit.

(Oh, and BTW, HAPPY BIRTHDAY OLEG!!!!!)

What camera are you going into? If it's the DVX, then definitely get the SD302 first. For your purposes you really don't need separate recording but the ability to let your sound man (or even yourself) quickly adjust the audio levels while also getting cleaner preamps, cutoff filters, limiters, etc is great. I was on the fence about this too recently but then bit the bullet and bought the SD302 and it's an amazing tool. Just make sure you get a bag for it too, either the Portabrace or Petrol.
