My Audio Kit

its a good suggestion, and worth thinking about.

personally, id go schoeps, but we all have our own choices, and you might get a LOT of mileage out of having two hypers. its very handy.

I have the wind protection taken care of, I'm just checking out other options than rycote. I'm seriously considering the K-tek blimp systems after the disaster with that Rycote Baby Ball Gag I got for my first Oktava.

As for shock mounts, I have a Sabra Som and I'm also going to get a AT8415 and most likely a rycote pistol grip just because I had one with my ME66 and liked it quite a bit.

And I bought some cannare Starquad cables off of ebay for a good price about a month ago. I think it was like 20' for 15.00. Of course I got more than one cable and of varying lengths.

I think I'm going to stick with the Schoeps though. I just can't get over how much I like the way these mics sound. And if I'm not getting the CMIT I'd like to at least have the CMC641. Utlimatley I decided that if the 416 is the tank everyone says it is it'll be perfect for my shoot due to the rugged conditions I expect and the CMC and B6 will be perfect for the interior sounds I want to get.

As for switching from the 702 to the Tascam, it really had nothing to do with the timecode feature, but more so the fact that the Tascam uses AA's which are far more convienient and easy to come by than are Sony M&L batteries. Now if the 702 could handle the same battery as the HVX that'd be a differet story entirely!

I was curious about one thing though. Everyone seems to consider the Neumann hypers to be pretty good but I haven't seen much talk about their shotguns. why is that?

This may seem OT, but I don't think so:

How many of us would be happy to trade our equipment for the stuff used by, say, Charlie Chaplin in "City Lights"? (He didn't even have a mic in the early days!) Or Hitchcock for his first movies?

Yet how many of us will reach their level of creative attainment and immortality?

As they say, it ain't the meat, it's the motion.

Okay just one simple question....where is the best and cheapest place to order a Tascam HD-P2 from? I'm ready to roder RIGHT NOW as soon as I find a good price. I want to start getting some of this experience stuff everyone keeps talking about even if it is just with my Oktava for the moment.

are you sure you want to get that recorder?

i got one and returned it right away.

look at anything from sound devices in the 7 series range.

the tascam is plastics, it doesn't do line in on xlr jacks, only on rca jacks and you can't work it out of a bag because half of the controls are on the top and you can't see them when it is in a bag.

its funny your going from super high end to fairly low end.

no offense to the people who have the tascam and love it but i felt like i was wasting my money due to the limitations i mentioned and just the general feel of the construction.

maybe it was because i had a 302 first and got accustomed to the sound devices quality.

Matthew,

I do have to disagree with you on the inability to use a Tascam out of a bag. I have used it in my bag several times. The controls on the top are generally for setting the project settings. Once you are recording, everything you need is right on the front. And yes, it is plastic, but it is very sturdy. And, it is important to note that Tascam has been making portable "plastic" recorders for some time (their DAT model DA...something, was the standard for years as a non-TC DAT recorder, and it lasted well for a long time). I even use the RCA jacks in for line-in in my bag without a problem. My only complaint, and it is very minor, is that the screen angles the wrong way for bag work. But it is still fully viewable the way it is. And, given that it is half the price of the 702 series, I still believe it is the best value for the dollar spent. I go line-in from my 302, so I still get the great SD pre's.

Well it's ordered. I chose to get it from Coffey Sound. Beleive me I wanted that 702, but if getting the Tascam means I can get some extra mics then so be it. And besides, I am still going to have the 302 in front of it and when I can afford to do so in a couple years I'll buy a 722. I just wanted to get started with SOMETHING. Everyone keeps saying experience experience experience (developers developers developers....scary stuff) and so I figured the sooner I start getting some the better.

Good choice.. Well, I think.

When you can get killer audio from your stuff (and the day will come), then imagine what will happen when you start upgrading the bits one at a time?

Big improvements, thats what.

I also decided to pick up a second Oktava so I can start doing effects work, but I'm still not entirely sure how the mics are suposed to be positioned.

There's MANY option for that; I prefer ORTF, others X-Y.

Do a google search, you will find diagrams of how to set it up....look for "stereo miking".

Well I switched my order and went with the SD 702 afterall. I'm going to partially be shooting in the desert and I'm thinking a metal casing will serve me better than plastic.

BTW, how much time will a 2800 MaH battery give me on the 702?
